Some Thoughts on the New 35s...

After having the 35s on for a few days now, I'm very happy with them and especially the 35s/4.88s combo. As a matter of fact, now I actually think 4.88 is a better ratio for 35s than it is for 33s!

Living in the mountains, lower gears are probably a little more important to me than a lot of people as I have to go up a lot of hills everyday. But I noticed something that I'm really liking.. It sounds weird, but I actually have more power now in most situations with the 35s than I did with 33s.

When I had 33s and 4.88s, I think it was such a low ratio for the tires that my truck would often hold in 3rd gear (auto) while going up a hill, trying to make it all the way up in that gear. And usually it did make it, it would just lug and go really slowly. If I wanted it to downshift to 2nd and get some power, I'd usually have to mash the gas pedal pretty much all the way down to the floor. So it was like the sweet spot was right in-between my 2nd and 3rd gear.

But with the 35s, now the truck feels the lugging a lot sooner and it kinda just knows that 3rd gear won't cut it anymore. Now I only need to give it just a little more gas as soon as it starts to lug and it'll downshift into 2nd right away and then fly right up that hill. So what I'm saying is, 2nd gear w/ 35s goes up hills a lot better than 3rd gear w/ 33s does. I really think 4.88s puts 2nd and 3rd gears back in their "sweet spots" a lot better with 35s than it does with 33s.

Overall, I notice a little power loss just getting going and I have to push the gas down a little bit more to hold freeway speed with the 35s, but all in all they are great! I've only gone through one tank of gas with them, but I got 14.5 avg (mtns and freeways) and I was getting ~16 avg. before with the 33s. I'm pretty happy with that! I have to say, if I knew it was gonna be like this, I would have gone to 35s a few years ago. :)

you running any extended bumpstops or limit straps to prevent tearing into the body while flexing?

I cut my fenders and pounded the firewall way back with a sledge. A couple pages back in my build thread I explain it in more detail. I get no rubbing at all except on the frame when I turn and the DS rear tire rubs a little on the gas tank fill tube guard, but that's only when fully flexed out.

Oh, and I did add 1/4" worth of washers under all the front bump stops and 1.5" bump stop spacers on the rears.
