Hello all, hope everyone is doing well. Or at least, you know, not dead. I have some questions for anyone who has had to deal with such a thing before, just to see if there is a legit problem, or if I am just crazy.
i have a 1997 4Runner, SR5, auto 4x4. 252K on it. I started having, every once in a while, lunging while under acceleration, between 25-3500 rpm, usually 30-45mph. Usually when cold. It would only do it occasionally. After all things where warm, it would drive normally.
Lately, the issue cropped up again, with more frequency until every morning when cold it would shudder and such betweeen 25-3500rpm and 30-45mph. Decided i didnt need it completely going to hell, so i took it in and got it looked at. Sure enough, the trans was so worn that it was starting to slip a bit. made sense. truck is old and for the first 200k, i didnt own it, so i dont know how it was driven/punished. Had the shop put in a remaned trans, and i picked it up saturday morning.
I drove it around, and first thing, it sounds louder than it did before, like the wind noise in the trans tunnel has been turned up to 11, or a panel was left off. From looking at the book and crawling under, there is no sign of a heat shield or anything like that.
Secondly, the transmission tunnel/center console and shifter got super warm...something I have never noticed before (not that it just started...i may have simply never noticed it.) It was warm enough to get my attention though.
It shifts a little rough. I was told this was part of the initial break in. drive it a bit and it will smooth. true?
when cold, it shifts like a barn door closing...I can shift my 83 Dodge truck smoother (this morning)
Yesterday, after letting it sit for about 4 hours, i started it and got a faint, high pitched whine when in Park, but not in reverse, and not when i returned it to park.
Shifting into reverse, there is a small delay (5-10 secs) before reverse engages.
There is a faint eggy smell like cooking ATF in the cabin, but not outside, and no leaks. I went under and over with a flashlight and couldnt see anything leaking, all the hoses are tight and no fittings are loose.
SO, with the list long, I plan on taking it back in to have them address these issues. However, i would like to tap all of your collective smarts to establish any sort of folly. the Trans does have a 36mo/50K warranty on it....believe me, it will get fixed right...
