Someone broke into my car..

In the midst of buying my new system, I get into my car today, about ready to go to the pots office to send something. And I see the window is broken, glass everywhere in the back seat.

Yes, someone broke the rear window, the smaller part, at least not the bigger window. They went into my trunk, and the onyl day I forgot to take out of my ipod out of the car, they got it.

Brand new video ipod for my birthday. Less than 1 month old. Stolen. It was in the center console so they couldn't see it. But Yah, they took my radios faceplate too, I had the faceplate hidden in the glove box. I know tis stupid but I figure if they can't see it, they won't jack it.

Anyone know a good website where I can get a faceplate? Besides Ebay?

I'm reall mad right now, kidn of feel like crying =( Around like $400 for the window I bet. And like $300 for the ipod. And like $100 for the faceplate I'm estimating. This sucks...

I live in a very nice neighborhood in San Francisco.

That sucks, dude. I feel your pain. I use to live on Ocean Ave (by City College) back with my parents in younger years and my old Toyota Corona was broken into and they tried to pull out the key tumbler in the steering column. Then a few years back, someone tried to jack open my Acura's door but stole the rear emblem instead. One of the risks of parking outside the street.

What part of SF did this happen if you don't mind me asking? It seems there is never a safe place to park unless it is your own private garage these days. I hope your insurance company will cover you.

Yah Ocean is pretty bad. Too close to Lakeview. A lot of my friends live down there. During the day its not too bad, but I know of a lot of people who get jumped there and mugged during the night.

How bad were your repairs? did they break the widnows?


I'm thinking about getting one of those alarms where they tell you if your car is being broken into. Have that beside my bed side, when it starts beeping I'll run outside with a baseball bat and peoples heads will get knocked in.

I'm only 16 so this obviously sucks. My insurance ocmpany said that they will repair anything over $1000. I highly doubt the window damage will be over $500.

I'm just really mad becasue its the only day where I keep my ipod i nthere, I've had my ipod for 1 month. And now I don't even have a radio. I need to get a faceplate, anyone know where I can get one?
 
Just filed a police report. I think I might've left my radio out, maybe thats why. Not even an expensive radio too. What's getting me is that the only time I leave my ipod in the car, they break into the car.

Sunset district/Noriega?!? Sunset is usually a very quiet neighborhood, that and Parkside. Although Noriega St. has some bustle because of the shops down near 19th Ave.

The only repair I did was to replace the key tumbler on the steering column ($40 if I remember - looong time ago). They kinda forced the window down to unlock the door on the Toyo. I never bothered to replace the rear Acura emblem on the Acura because the car was already paid for and was 8+ years old already. I just covered the holes so that rain would not get in. It sucks too right now because it's raining non-stop in the bay area so make sure you seal up that window until you can get it fixed.

I don't know about the alarms, you might want to search the electronics subforum for your question. You'll probably get more comprehensive anwsers. On an upnote, you still have your truck. Thank god for the engine immobilizer system. I have a 4th gen, and although I have the engine immoblizer I still use a brake pedal lock. It's probably overkill, but I figure I use it since it was left over from my wife's aging and now donated nissan.

I know you're frustrated and downright pissed. I can't blame you. You have every right to be. Let the insurance work for you (and if they don't, light the fire under their ass!). I guess you can look at it as one of life's crappy lessons and not leave valuables in the car (even if they are out of sight). Just remember not to loose too much sleep over it, life is too short to stay pissed about inanimate objects.

they made off with my stereo, laptop, digi camera and school books.

Yah I know. At least now I know, I guess it oculd've been wrose. Like they could've broke the rear motorized window which would've cost like $500 or mroe. But nstead thye broke the wing which will cost like $200 at max. My neighborhood is usualyl very good, but i'm sure its a target for thieves.

Damn mole, that sucks sorry to hear that. It definately could've been worse for me, like I could've left some of my other valuable stuff. It's just killing me that I left my ipod in there for 1 nigth and that 1 night my stuff gets broken into.
 
NViejeP, you're pretty much in my neck of the woods. Don't let living in the Sunset/Parkside fool you that it's a safe neighborhood. It's a heck of a lot safer than HP or TL, but it sure isn't Seacliff or St. Francis Wood. There's been a rash of home invasions and break-ins. My grandma had her house broken into a few years back. If I catch any bastard trying to remove my property, someone won't have limbs or will be dismembered. My cousin who lives with us had his center caps stolen off his Camry. I got lucky that they didn't take mine, we both have 5th gen Camrys with alloys.

You might want to try a body shop for a replacment window. Another place that sells aftermarket glass is Levan over by Bayshore.

IMO, SF isn't the greatest city to live in and I don't see what the hype is with all my friends who wished they live in the City. It's crowded, congested and housing prices are through the roof.

Yah I know Sunset isn't always that great. But I never really thought it would happen. I know Richmond for some reason is targetted a lot. A lot of my friends who live there have their parents car jacked numerous times. I'm glad they didn't take my center caps, another $60 down the drain if they did.

How do you think the prices/quality of the work from the dealership compare to other places like a glass shop? Will they both be good?

Ocean and sunset is a pretty big difference. Sure ocean isn't hunter point but its a few blocks away from Lakeview which is pretty bad.

I like SF, sure the people aren't that great, I've had numerous run ins with getting jumped, mugged, threatened, and one time a group of guys decided to come to where we were and slap us around. one of my friends said he felt a gun on his back, fake or real, still kind of shady. Oh this was in the sunset too, some people came from Lakeview and West point supposedly.

But yah, I really don't know where I'm taking it, dealer quoted me on the phone around $200 but he doesn't know for sure. Expesnive or cheap for the wing window of the rear passenger side?
 
I can almost say skip the dealership with certainty. They usually subcontract out to a local glass shop and add markup for their own profits. With that said, glass shops usually offer some type of guarantee on their workmanship. When a chip cracked the windshield on my Camry, I called the dealership about replacing it. They quoted $750 vs. $600 from Safelite. If you have full coverage, you can always request that OEM glass be used. Your insurance company can't deny you on it nor can they make you pay the difference. My insurance said, it was my right to request OEM glass, but they just don't offer it up front because OEM cost about a $100 more than aftermarket glass. But the only difference is having 'Toyota' on the glass. Safelite IMO is a good shop and they have mobile units that come out and replace the window at your home. Otherwise, you can try the yellow pages and call up a few glass shops.

Good luck. We got to get a vigilante neighborhood watch group. ;):

Sadly there are pieces of shit in this world that steal! If they put as much effort into getting an education and a real job, they could prob rule the world. Nothing more than 2 bit thugs! Sadly, there is a new one of the morning news every day. I call it the TOD! Thug of the Day.

Luckily the rear wing window, the part that the person broke, was quoted at $200 from the dealer, I'm sure it could be cheaper at a glass shop.

It appears that this thief knew you owned an ipod or watch you drive and park with the ipod accessory in play. He/she probably peeped you out while you hid the parts in your glovebox and center console. I always look around whenever I pulled into a place to park and while getting out of my truck. One of the reasons I refuse to upgrade to a DVD Navi system is the fear of my truck being vandalize.

Good luck to you on repurchasing the stolen merchandise. BTW, I had my windshield replaced by safelite. They were the best value and I was satisfied with the job they did on my truck.
 
i feel your pain it happen to me a month after i brought the truck
they took my eclipse nav very disturbing i was never able to buy a new nav couldnt afford it
 
Yah it makes me wonder if someone was watching. It was at like 7:00, I was with my friends, and we got out quick because I was parking my car and we were walking to my friends house. I forgot exactly what happened, I know for a fact I put the iPOD in the glovebox or the center console. But I don't know if I left the ipod plug into the head unit or not. That might've hinted something.

Just got my window reaplce, $125 + tax and a $5 tip. Not too bad. Dad will probably pay for that though. However, I've got like $200, a pair of JL XR650CSis, and I'm radioless and iPODless so I don't know what to do.
 
it happen across the street from my house the truck was parked,
and in fact that night i sat outside and starred at my truck for about an hour with a big smile cause it was new and i just waxed it that day. the insurance woun't replace my nav or my step bar so i didnt even put the claim in cause of my deductable. so i brought a new glass and step bar and moved on
 
They took your runningboard too? Thats harsh. Yah I've pretty much moved on, just got to find a way to get a bigger income of money. Maybe I'll sell some of my old stuff on ebay, get some more money, buy a new ipod, finish my system, park my car in th egarage, and I should be good.
 
Oh, rear hitch step. I also thought they took your running boards on the sides. Thieves need be shot in the act. Our laws are too lax towards defending our own property.
