Someone school me on exhausts

I've got a 03 4runner v8. I love the rig, but after having a 96 Mustang it just seems too quiet. I'm wanting something to make it a little louder (not "loud", but probably just enough you could hear inside the vehicle). My second thing is I'd like to make it exit out of the side. Should I be looking to just remove the resonator (any issues doing this), or should I be looking for a new set of mufflers? I've also seen catback systems, but I don't think for my needs it will be necessary. Any suggestions for my rig? I had flowmasters on the Mustang and loved it, but it's just way too loud (don't wanna wake up the neighbors). Also, can you guys give me a ball park price for what I'd be looking for to have this done? The local exhaust shop isn't very friendly, so I'm not sure where I'll have the work done (otherwise I'd just contact them). Thanks!

what did you have on the stang, 40s? thats what i had on my 94. the flowmaster 50s are quieter, & the 70s are just slightly louder then stock. whatever you get yea you can cut the res. off & angle to the side, in fact , you might want to try that first & see how much louder, if any it gets. heres a link for sound clips on the flows. I can't remember what I had on the mustang, either the 40s or 44s. Those combined with a h pipe and no cats was loud! I'd like a deep tone that's audible but not overwhelming. The sound of the SUV 50 series sounds great but idk about the loudness. As you mentioned, I may try taking off the resonator and do the side exit and go from there.

I would go with a borla or magnaflow muffler if you wanted. my friends dad 04 Tundra has a welded in borla and sounds nice. and if you wanted to talk to someone in the car you can. To be honest I don't like flowmaster as they are aluminum. just my opinion. they do sound nice though. if you wanted you should go with the 44's. the are sweet.

On all the sites, I don't see any products listed for the 03 4runner (Flowmaster, Borla, Magnaflow). The more I look at it, the more I think I may want to do a full catback system. I can get the Gibson for around $300 and do the install myself since it's bolt on and not welded like the others. I like the idea of it not being a permanent mod like the mufflers would be. Would you guys recommend Gibson, Doug Thorley, or something else? The two I mentioned seem to be relatively cheap and in the budget I'd like to keep, but I'm not sure on them. Would performance be much difference between the muffler and the whole catback system?

Thanks for the link! You hit my point exactly. I don't see why I would pay ~$130 for the muffler, then pay for install and other miscellaneous parts. I figure $200 will be a conservative estimate. However, I've found both the Gibson and Doug Thorley cat-back system for around $300. From what I have read, this stuff just bolts on so there shouldn't be any issues with me doing the install myself. Also, while it won't be anytime soon, I may be looking to sell one day and the ability to move it back to stock is a huge plus. My concern would be the tone and volume of the exhaust, but I'm hoping I can find sound clips on the web (haven't had time to look yet). Any more input on this? Thanks!

Thanks! Due to a couple of other setbacks, the exhaust has been pushed down the list for the moment. I'll be doing it eventually, just other things have taken priority.

What ever you go with make sure it is made of stainless steel. It will last a lot longer.

:iagree: Here in Wisconsin we salt in winter so if I didn't go with the ss version it will probably rust within the first year. Btw here is my install thread :frisky:

One thing you can do is use youtube to find what you like. I did this for my Mustang. Just do a search for 4runner exhaust and most people post what they have. You can listen and figure out which ones you like best.

if you can find one, get the TRD dual exhaust. i lucked out this past summer by finding a new one really cheap. it only fits 03-04 v8s
