Something broke, now it shakes

Hey, that's a nice '99 manual!
The lame thing about loving these dang things so much is that they aren't getting any younger [emoji24]
As far as parting out or selling yours outright, we'd need more pics! By the looks of your engine bay- it's a nice rig!

Rod bearing won't affect power or cause the cylinder to die outright. Just makes noise until it goes completely. I would put money on a dropped valve. That sounds like a piston beating the crap out of something, which would also explain your loss of power and the oil fouled plug.
 
Would a dropped valve make noise all the time or only when it idles down? Never experienced it before so I'm not sure.

The rod knock I had in my grand prix sounded similar to the OP but not as high pitched. It did only make noise when I would let off the gas though and I had metal glitter in the oil.

You know just for Giggles you can pull the valve cover on that side and check the valve springs. I'd be very curious to hear what you found.

Remodeling is done and it's back in the garage, will try and let you know this weekend

pulled the driver side valve cover. fouled plug was on cylinder #2. intake manifold was full of oil all the way to the throttle body. I don't see a dropped valve, all seem to be in place with tension. What more should I be looking for?

Probably a new motor. :)
 
found an engine with 85k on it, guy said he'd pull it tomorrow and bring it to me from alabama this week for $750. 30 day warranty. This is out of a salvage yard. no info on it other than the miles. Wants a deposit before he pulls it. worried about the risk, but at this point i'm at a loss.
 
Bit of a 'hindsight' question, but where was the temp gauge (I know, I know, it's a coolant dummy gauge not oil temp gauge, but still) and how high did you rev when this happened?

Regardless of engine, it should at least have run long enough for proper oil lubrication before revving. I'd honestly say stay under 2k RPMs till the gauge starts to get towards the middle. Worst thing on an engine is high revs at a cold start.

OH this was totally self inflicted. It was cold and I revd too high.

Not bad. I'd ask him to at least pull off a valve cover to make sure it looks clean.

Don't beat yourself up on this one too much. While not good for the motor, you aren't going to spin a bearing or throw a rod from a high rev while the engine is still cold. This problem was a long time coming (I'm still not convinced on the extent of the damage, however I didn't watch the video or anything). Just be glad it was in your driveway and not 500 miles from home.

P.s. They've done studies that show that the motor is fully lubricated with oil after running for about 10 seconds.

Thanks for the encouragement. Been pretty sick about it. I pulled the valve cover gasket. I have a misfire on 2 because the cylinder is full of oil. So maybe a ring failure on the piston, or a cracked piston either way the cylinder wall is probably shot. Throttle body had oil in it, intake ports 1-3 all full of oil. I don't see anything here costing under a grand either in swap of rebuild
