A few days ago I started working on my diff drop, and when I crawled underneath to remove the skid plate bolts saw that only one bolt was holding it in, and the son of biscuit is on very tight and is...drumroll please...stripped.

Any recommendations for getting that sucker off with basic hand tools. PB blaster as been applied liberally, and there is no way to get the socket to grip. I could try vice grips but that will probably only make it worse.

Is the head rounded, or are the threads messed up? If the head is rounded, try cutting a slot in the head and using an impact driver to get it out. If the threads screwed up, your best bet might be to try and drill out the center with a new bit IMO

Yep, head is rounded off enough that a socket can't break it loose without slipping on the head. I don't have a dremel/cut off wheel or impact to get the bas**** off. Guess I'll try raping it with my vice grips. If that doesn't work I'll have to have it cut off or something.
 
You mean easy outs? That is definitely an option. They are one of those tools that are great to have, but you never want to have to use them.

Yep, good point. Some people have good luck with Easy Outs. I say some becuase I've broken two and gave up. Much harder to drill out a bolt after breaking an easy-out off in it.

Harbor Freight tools sells some pretty inexpensive hand-impact drivers. Just for clarification these are the ones you hold and strike with a hammer. A dremil is also a great piece to add to your tool box.

I don't really know a single person in Jersey let alone one that could weld. Besides, if I knew someone that could weld I'd have a new bumper:naughty:

The bolt sounds like it is rusted to heck. I would use visegrips. Make sure you spray with a penetrate to prevent from breaking the bolt off in the frame.
 
I had the same problem when trying to get the bolts off for the brush guard I recently put on. I had rounded off one of them with the socket and couldn't get it to grip enough with/out slipping off. I went to a couple places to price bolt extractors and they were just more than I was willing to pay. Finally I just took it to a local shop and had em get it loose with an impact wrench. Try going to a couple places and seeing if they won't get that sucker off for you.

I've had some luck with reverse drill bits.....
 
This may not help but two of the bolts only connect the two portions of skid plate together. If it is those two then you can drop both pieces together and have total access. However it sounds like you are unlucky in that it is the hard to reach ones that connect to the frame
 
the only way u can get it out is using this: gator grip
