Sonic Tools or Comparable

Currently I have a HomeDepot Husky with random tools just thrown everywhere and it is not working with my analness. Had to change the wifes pads and rotors the other day and I was losing it looking for tools.

So did some googling and found these guys.

SONIC Tools: Professional Tools. Professional Technicians.

Anyone know of any comparable brands that have the cut outs that I can compare to?

I don't do any major wrenching just on my own vehicles as needed.

I am pretty much set on buying a new set.

I’ve seen them around, but I don’t know much about them. If you search them there are discussions in forums like Garage Journal. Seems to be re-branded tools in fancy clothing.

As much as I like the presentation and the cut-outs, I just build my own sets with things I know I like and organize it well… Knipex, GearWrench, Sunex, Wiha, Wera, Snap-On flare nut for brakes, Klein, and plenty of others…

That said, I never looked at price. Don’t know if its competitive, but if the price is right, I would consider it, but when it comes to tools, I just get what I need when I need it. For the saved money, I can buy organizational stuff and make my box pretty nice.

A lot of the packaging can be placed in a toolbox. All of the socket sets fit with the lid removed which I think is by design because they are designed to be removed on the black cases.

Why not get generic organizers and build it out that way?

The only reason I am hesitant towards very large sets is because I don't think everything that comes in these sets are good quality or value.

I will not cut it out my self because it will look like ass.

But if you have some recommended organizers I'm open to other ideas.

I want to buy whole set just so I have everything at once. I really hate going out and buying as needed honestly. I think something like Snap On would be a complete waste for the work I would be doing. I have a bunch of off the shelf stuff from O Rileys now so anything on par or a little better would probably satisfy me.

Seems like Sonic's replacement policy is fast.

I prefer magnetic holders. But for my main tool box, I often use generic organizer holders. I do keep my drawers pretty clean though. I don't like searching for tools. And they all get cleaned before they go back in the box.

I would simply go to amazon or another online retailer and buy what you need. Best ones are not cheap. Magnetic socket holders are my favorite. I don't strictly adhere to this - but the general standard is red holders for SAE and black for metric. I use whatever is cheapest at the time.

I don't have a great organizer idea for pliers. I have two drawers full of pliers and vice grips that I always struggle to keep organized. I'd love some ideas for those.

Also why does the 16mm wrench exist? Has anyone ever in any instance come across a 16mm head on any fastener? I have never found one. Not once. Ever. Nor have I ever come across a 9mm. I often remove those from my sets.

I'm probably missing half those sockets too lol. So my organizers would be missing pieces all over.

I didn’t realize you had a broken set… I’m just curious what your budget is and what exactly do you need in a set? Just sockets, wrenches, metric and standard?

I find common size sets to be very affordable, and the better sets don’t have any missing sizes which can become a serious annoyance. I also dislike lets which might exclude a metric size because there is an SAE equivalent.

Sometimes general sets dont come with things like ratcheting wrenches which you need to get separate anyways.

I’m pretty big on screw driver sets for the type of work I do, Wiha and Wera make some great stuff too… here is something I picked up recently which was a very complete set.

I don't want to say I'm rich but money isn't really a problem so I haven't set a budget. But I also think buying a full on Snap On set would be overkill so I'm looking for a middle brand and the organization of Sonic is what really got me.

I was looking at the Sonic S9 cabinet and will probably build my own as the pre-made ones aren't giving me the warm and fuzzy.

I have wrenches and sockets I think they go from 10mm to about 21mm. Whats missing in between I honestly couldn't say. I am missing a full range of the deep sockets on the larger sizes. My current sockets only have shallow ones for the big sizes.

Pliers I got a POS needle nose and thats it. I could use more variety on this.

Chisels, picks pry bars I have 0 right now.

Kinda why I'm looking for a good set to start and add the individual ones as needed later.

Pliers are one of my favorite tools... I highly, highly recommend looking at Knipex pliers.

They really are some of the best I have ever used.

That's a cool and interesting product...but at $41+ a square foot I'll pass!

Totally agree with you on that… but the post gave me some ideas on a DIY.

I use this two part expanding foam at work for insulation and have a ton of it laying around. I was thinking of making a drawer mold out of wood, around the size of the tool box drawer and basically make blanks which should just about do the same thing.

Alternately, maybe place the tools inside in an arrangement I like, put a trash bag or clear stretch wrap over it, pour foam and let it fit the shape of the tools. Might take more time to process and cleanup but it’s an idea.

Maybe some pre-made board insulation would work too.

Not sure if the 2 part foam will work very well because you would have to somehow control it so it was flat on the top and bottom, I know you can trim it but by the time I did all that my time would be better spend just buying the product here, now the foam board on the other hand may work well, the one thing I noticed was the product post here seem to have a fabric surface of some type, so get some stretchable fabric and glue it to foam board and you may have a winner!

Ya, might not be the best because it can get messy… but I have gallons and gallons of the stuff so it’s the first thing I thought of. I already know it’s more work than I am willing to do.

I bought a label maker and labeled the drawers… I already feel like a winner.

The problem with tool storage and organization is you lose density if you want it nicely displayed. I already have two tool chests and ran out of space again. These days if my pliers make it back into the drawer labeled pliers, I think I’m going pretty good.
