soon to be a 4runnner owner

so i have finally had my share of VW's. love the cars and plan on keeping my golf as a project / auto-x car, but after owning at least 15 (lost count now) and sinking countless thousands of dollars into them, i'm finally done. for a while i thought i wanted to buy a new VW (4th gen) but realized that their eagerness to void a warranty just wasn;t worth it. compounded by the frequent break downs they suffer from. and dont even get me started on the new jetta and soon to be golf. :bash:

a few years ago, i almost bought my first 4runner. a 95 sr5. loved them. but now times changed and i'm looking for something a bit newer with less mileage. dont know if i plan on buying before or after winter, but it just feels like its time. i'm buying my first house, and my doberman pup is getting really big really fast. so it will be nice to be able to haul stuff around. and take diesel (my dobe) to the park or lake.

anyway, enough rambling now, what should i look for in a t4r? i know i want an sr5, and i dont want a limited. gotta be 4x4 and cloth. how much am i looking to spend on something around '99? what are some good parts sites. i love brush guards, and a good mild suspension lift. are there common problems with them to look out for?

let me start out by congratulating you on making the right desicion again. I think i can help you out with a couple of these things.

for those specification your probly looking at anywhere from $10,000 - $14,000 depending on condition and milage. Ive seen a 99' SR5 go for $7,000 with 160,000 mi on it.

what are some good parts sites. i love brush guards, and a good mild suspension lift. are there common problems with them to look out for?

Burtman Industries offers some excellent products, as well as Jaos. Another favorite of mine is ARB Products for the more off-roading side of 4runners.

A good/mild suspension lift is either going to be OME (Old Man Emu Suspension) which is made by ARB, or Cornfed Suspension also another good/mild suspension kit.

so are there any weak spots with the 3rd gen 4runners? i know i always see the ass sagging on the 2nd gen which was a pretty big reason i didnt get one. not sure what the deal is on those.

hahahaha yea i know exactly what your talking about, i see that all the time. i havent seen any weak points in mine yet other than poor gas milage. i cant really think of anything to complain about, ive never had a problem with mine.

thats what i like to hear. i'm so tired of working on my cars to fix the little problems that keep coming up. maintenance, and upgrades.. yeah, i can gladly handle those.
