sorru quick question trucks at the shop, coil replacement?

how hard is this, how long should it take, they want $265 for diagnosing it and replacing it , should i attempt to do this on my own?

One of the ignition coils? Do you have a 10mm socket? Do it yourself but make sure they tell which one is bad first whats the problem?
 
If you have changed your spark plugs you have already removed your coils before. If that $265 is for diagnostics, parts and replacement. Probably not that far off the price.

ToyotaPartsales.com(trdparts4u.com) shows list price of $97 and their internet sales price of $70 for the Ignition Coil plus shipping(usually around $10).
 
yeah that s all of it and seems to be the problem that i'm having with misfire on cylinder 1, the truck was having a rough time getting up to speed, also what are the chances of the others going now? i heard that once one goes the rest aren't far behind and that i should do a plug and wire change asap as well...thoughts on this?
 
well just my quick math tells me you can get all 3 coil packs with shipping and do them yourself for same price shop is charging for 1 of them. Yes they even offer expedited shipping options.

well thats the problem is i'm at 160 now for diagnostics and then $260 out the door for the replace coil pack, this same thign happened a few weeks ago and the problem just went away they checked it out for about 2 hours that day and rove it a bunch and gave it back free of charge thinking that it was just a bad coil wire and not the pack, today on my way in to work it comes back i drop it off to have them figure it out, they charge me the labour to find the problem, coil pack this time ,$12 in gas (was low last time i dropped it off) , and i'm at $160 they have a denso coil pack on teh shelf and tell me for $260 otd they can replace it, i told them to just go ahead and do it as i would only be saving $30 or so, my above question is about what to do if anything next, should i just swap out the other coil packs,plugs and wires or ride with them till i need to change them again (swapped in @ 150K now at 225K, mi)
 
I don't buy the "one is gone, the others are going too.." idea. The other two could easily outlive the vehicle. On the plugs, the two on that coil could easily be fouled, and should be inspected or changed--if due, yeah, do all six. The wires have no causal relationship with the coil failure, but if due (I did mine at 100k), why not? The original factory plug wires have the year on the wire--THOSE would be due.

I figured they had a couple hours into it to determine for sure it was the coil pack. That is why I had this in my first response. I also know that some shops will offer free diagnostic in hopes to get the repair which is why I had also posted the quick math posting. The fact that they are only charging Dealer list with no additional mark up is good.

yeah i thought the change was at or around 80K-100K
i plan on doing everything plugs and wires question is do i need to do the packs as well and how big of a pita is the back side of the engine to get to for swapping out plugs i hear those are a joke to get to....
 
I agree with Durk you should be good with just the one replaced coil pack. The only plug that is a PITA is the drivers rear. The others weren't to bad. I think I used a 6" and 3" extension in order to get to it.

yeah they're a good shop been with them for years and they are the ones who take the dealerships overflow, so i know they know what they are doing, thanks for the help on this one pikeman just wanted to make sure it was cool to give them the "go ahead and fix that" order without doing some quick checking.

also denso plugs? and what wires? suggestions? not looking for anything fancy for more power and such just want the engine to run well, so stock numbers would be sweet or whatever your guys use. as i know the 2 of you don;t put crap in your trucks
 
I used all factory stuff. I know Brian2sun has posted the numbers in a few other threads asking about plugs and wires. Our trucks don't like after market plugs or wires so stick factory.
 
I just read that link. I have a slight pulse feeling while cruising at 2000 rpms. I wonder if I have a coil going bad.

He doesn't say where he got it. I'm still not buying it. Here are your numbers:

90919-01192 Spark plug = NipponDenso # K16TR11 or NGK # BKR5EKB-11 (both OEM)
19037-62010 Spark plug cables or NGK TE66(what I used, sparkplugs.com or partsgeek.com or Amazon, among others. 30K and all good so far).

That drivers rear plug is no big deal. There is a vertical bracket in the way. Pull top bolt, loosen bottom bolt and swing it to the side. Then a long extension and you're golden. Replace using a length of 3/8" fuel hose to get the plug threaded--this way you can feel the resistance if you are cross-threading.

Mine was pulsing as well and doing it every now and again over the last couple of months till my check engine light started to flutter and finally went solid but then drove fine fir 2 weeks or so after i pulled the code and replaced a wire i thought all.was good two weeks later pulsing and loss of power happened on the way to work this am so i drop it back by the shop and made this thread.

I hope my little story helps in some way just want to say it was intermittent for a good while before it went pop this morning , when it did go i could easily tell i was short a cylinder but other wise pulsing and lack of throttle when trying to accel hard.


Durk- thanks for that man saved me a bit of time tonight and glad to hear it's not as bad as people say.
