sorry need quick answer on inner tie rods replacement

How much should it cost, how easy is it todo at home? And is $510 + tax too much at firestone right now getting my alginment and they mentioned i need to do those as the inner moves up and down from flexing the tire, they also said my cv's where blown from all of the grease all over the place... . Just to confirm that's normal after the ome lift right? Thanks just wondering if i need to drop the 1500$ to fix all of this

No that's just the tie rod work, im getting the lifetime alginment at firestone and they caught the inner tie rods and quoted me 510+ tax just for the tie rods and labour. Btw life time alginment is only$ 150 and my local store doesn't seem to care about switching parts and all of the rest, so you can get an alginment put on a lift the alignment again decide you want to take the lift off and Align again and all of it is covered by the orginal$ 150

I just did the tie rods on my pass set after the boot tore. It is simple to do the tie rods once I bought a few tools. I would recommend doing both the inners and outers. The outers are 50 bucks a piece and the inners are 120. Those prices are through online toyota places. If Firestone used non-oem parts it would be around 50 for an inner. I purchased the following tools from national tool warehouse:

1 @ $59.29 - Large Inner Tie Rod Tool LIS-54500

1 @ $24.33 - Tie Rod Remover/Pitman Arm Puller OTC-6296

I used the tie rod remover to pop the outer tie rod out of the spindle. Took me 5 minutes. Then you remove the boot. The inner tool is a giant socket that goes over the tie rod and you remove it with a 1/2 inch ratchet. The local dealer wanted 500 in labor to do one side. I almost laughed after it took me about a hour to do the job.

Izzard- once your vehicle is in the system for the Lifetime alignment they must honor that. Also boots leaking is common after installing a new lift, several threads on how to add a new clamp that usually fixes it. The price and labor is pretty close to market but as RJaudi said isnt that tough to do on your own. You will need to get it aligned again after you replace them.

Yeah they wanted 190 for both sides and 132 per side for labour ... since this is my next project anything else i should replace. What about a new steering rack all together doesn't that come with the tie rods? I've been reading about others replacing these for around $300 or so is that right?

Make sure to replace the outers when you replace the inners, you tend to destroy the outers when you take them off. Plus its just good practice, might as well do it while its off.

That $337 does not include:

-Brackets
-Bushings
-TIE ROD ENDS



If you get new tie rod ends now (since you need them), the new ones can come off the old rack and go on a new rack sometime down the road if you want to get a new rack. I wouldn't replace a good factory rack with a crappy reman though. Wait until you actually need a rack. For now, get the tie rods, and call it good.

I just went through this whole debate. A new factory rack is 680 online. This includes the inner tie rods and new boots. That is a reasonable choice. I wouldnt trust a reman rack. Also, those tie rods that the rack includes are the cheap aftermarket ones. I decided that my rack was working fine and I'd go with the OEM tie rods.

Thanks for slowing me down, and putting some sense in the chaos that is my head lol will order oem parts listed above and not get ahead of myself, since i'm this deep should i also swap out the steering rack bushing as well it has 222659 miles on it and i wouldn't mind having a tight feel back in the wheel

Sounds awfully familiar! Right when I bought my 4-runner I had to get the inner tie rods replaced and actually got them done at Firestone as well. Can't recall how much they were but if I get a sec I'll run out and check the records. I also got the lifetime alignment then- one hell of a deal! I use it all the time and seems to get the job done :frog:

Unfortunately, went in there yesterday to get an alignment done only to find out that my outer passengers tie rod is shot now. Must have went out from wheeling last weekend- $185 installed. I didn't get it done yet cause I may do it myself but that'll give you an idea of what it'd cost to do the outer.

Question for those with experience- Are tie rods something that half to be replaced often if you wheel a lot?
