I really want a lift for my T4R but unless i buy it off of my dad he wont let me. He wants me to pay him what he paid which is 7000. He told me if i go offroading again and he catches me he is gonna sell it...Any Ideas?

That's a tough one-guessing you are still under your folks roof and depend on them to some extent. See if you can't work a deal with him to work off the purchase price over time. Or, pack a cooler of his favorite beverages and sandwiches, and take him on a light off-road trip with you. This way he can see the enjoyment you get from it and you spend some quality time together. (all together now...ahhhhhh). Try to gain common ground with him. It just might work. :vader:

Dads have their own agendas

Basically I believe your father is protecting his sizable investment.

Many auto insurance companies do not cover off road travel. In his own way I believe he is saying to you: "Do what you want to your own ride"

A stock 4Runner is more than capable without any lift, but you're perhaps seeking a more aggressive look and capability.

You might be better off finding a first gen or 2nd gen ( I think I saw a thread about it might be time to sell this 3rd gen?) and it will be easier to afford based on your current wages. Then over time you can acquire his nicer and newer 3rd gen and get to work modding it as many of us have done.

Remember that deep down he is simply trying to look out for your best interests as well, though it may not be exactly obvious at this time.

I'm a Dad so I think I can speak with some actual knowledge on this subject. We were all young and somewhat foolish at one time or another, he simply does not want such adventure happening in this current vehicle thus protecting your life and his investment at the same time.

Yeah, see if you can work it out and get him interested...at least enough to let you do some mild 4-wheeling. He might enjoy it and cut you some slack if he's comfortable about how adventuresome you intend to be. If not, then it's best to listen to Pops until you no longer need his money, his food, or his roof. You can always make it a move-out present to yourself later. After all, it sounds like he hooked you up pretty good with a 4Runner in the first place. I was stuck borrowing my Mom's miniature station wagon until I was almost out of college, so don't feel like he has it out for you.

Go ask your mommy.

After all it is STILL your fathers truck as you have not purchased it just yet. I have to agree with the quoted post. 7k isn't exactly just money that's lying around.

When you yourself invest 7-10k in a vehicle you do appreciate it alot more and tend not to make stupid choices you can't afford to fix. Buy it off him and after it's yours (in your name) then you should be able to do whatever it is you please with your rig.

But if you're still under the parents roof please try and respect their opinions and wishes.

What year? How many miles? what condition? If the vehicle is worth it find a way to either work it out with him or get a loan and buy it, he is invested in the vehicle and in you and trying to teach you to be an adult and own what you are going to drive and modify.

I think this is a good opportunity for you to demonstrate that you are a responsible person and I would have a serious discussion with your father about what options you may have.

at least he is giving you the option to buy it, my dad took me to the auto auction for my first 3 cars and they were $150 POS's that lasted me less than a year each, LOL

yeah at least he's trying to work with you, see if you can make payments, there was no way in hell my rents would let me take their car out on the trail when i was 16-23 as in that time i toasted 7 cars from various off-roading forays, i don;t know much about you but i know personally for me i was far to dumb and reckless to be driving that nice of a truck, i had to stick with the 1.5K specials and get them running that way t didn't matter if i flipped them, skewered them, caught them on fire, or any of the other re****ed things i managed to do when i was younger.

i really have to agree with ron, i think he's watching out for you and his investment at the same time, you really should just get an old 2 nd gen for 1-2K and work on it and enjoy your wheeling as if he feels his truck is still worth 7K you don;t really want to be beating that up on the trail, my truck has 200K+ on it now so i see no problem taking it on the trail but a nicer lower milage truck i would have mixed feelings about, heck this '99 is still the nicest truck i've ever owned so i treat her with kit gloves more often then not anyways. haha

Thanks guys. Ive had a couple days to think about it and i do see where hes coming from, but the way he talks about offroading it seems hes completely misinformed because he just talks about how you always tear something up. So I'm gonna just lay off, and save up and buy a 1st gen on my own. Thanks again guys.

I stuck with a $1.5k Special, what are you getting at here????

He is right, he doesnt want his paint screwed up, his body panels screwed up, motor hydrolocked, and other shit broken, and im sure he wants to make sure his son is safe too.

Thats the best plan right there! Buy your own!!

Your dad is right though, offroading does tear up stuff on a car! Someone will probably disagree with me on here, but if you go offorad enough, something is bound to break, get dented scratched or whatever. Even if you are careful, it WILL happen eventually. You just have to plan and budget for that. BUT, since you dont own the vehicle, I wouldnt take it offorad.

And no offense, but Im guessing you are in highschool, and I remember the kind of offroading I did in highschool. It was behind Home Depot, or in the Trinity River, or some other illegal place. I usually buried my truck and hitched a ride home, and somehow managed to get it out the next day. Looking back now, it seems all I did was tear up a good vehicle; when you are young its easy to go heavy on the gas and worry about the consequences later! Especially if you didnt pay for the vehicle!

Knowing how hard I was on my first truck, there is no way I would let my kid off road in a truck I own. When I was 16 and 17, I beat the holy crap out of my old '86 yota p/u, but I bought it with the money I earned working for 2 years at a shitty little kid amusement park called Santa's Village, so I could do whatever I wanted with my truck. Sure didn't stop my Dad from yelling at me still, but that's all he could do. Money talks man, buy your own.

Thanks again guys. I dont wheel at rough places just the skidder trails behind the house, and a little rock crawling in the creek. Ive only been once and had a blast, i cant wait to get my own so i can go again...

Bought my son the T4R on March 16th. Today is May 13th, and he's been grounded from the Runner for 3 weeks out of the 8 we've had it. The first time because he took it wheeling with his buddies only 2 days after I bought it while I was out of town.
Please understand your father isn't trying to be a hardass. These guys are right, $7K is a pile of cash these days, and he's protecting you and his investment.
Maybe, since I'm not your dad, you will heed these words. Don't push it. When he says "no" deal with it. I'm all about doing a little offroading myself, but my son isn't the greatest driver in the world, and I don't want him getting into trouble with a vehicle until he and I have done some wheeling together, and then ONLY if he listens to me and follows my advice.
I think you've got the right idea to work, save up, and buy another offroader yourself. Do that, and you might be surprised that he will actually agree with you. If you are responsible enough to work for what you want, then you just might be responsible enoug to wheel on your own.
See how that works? I wish my boy could see it. Be a lot more peaceful around the house.
Just my $0.02.

well said

tdaggett has it...

Lightly offroading will probably not cause any damage-but when you are young you are still learning a lot of techniques that a lifetime of experience have taught some of the rest of us.

Even then you don't have to look far in this very forum to see guys stuck in mud pits they should never have ventured into-in deep water they had no way of knowing exactly how deep and so on.

Even as an adult I have made stupid mistakes. Your father is teaching you a little bit of how to respect the worth of a vehicle. I'm glad you're learning and willing to listen, he truly does have your best interest at heart.
