Sound deadening material

I am thinking of adding some sound deadening material to my 07 Runner when I change out the factory speakers. Which product is the best? How much of this stuff does it take to cover all four doors?

Anyone added this stuff (DynaMat, Rammat, etc) to their Runners?

I'd like to hear your thoughts and opinions, as I'm new to all this.

I have done extensive installs on may cars before my 4Runner (nothing in this one yet) and I've found it to be very quiet as it is. However, if you do decide to add some, there are alternatives to Dynamat - which is usually pretty overpriced for what you get.

First, there was a company back in the day called McMaster-Carr. What they did was sell the same stuff Dynamat did, without the label. I used to use that but it stunk like crazy in the heat of Las Vegas.

After that, I tried Raammat, and I was very very pleased with it. Rick is a really nice guy and he's got some great products for good prices.

Hi madjanx...I've recently done a bunch of research on this subject as I revamped the system in my 4Runner. I decided to go with Dynamat and found a great price for a bulk box of it (36sf). This was enough to do all 4 doors and entire inside of the rear-quarter panel where the sub is housed. I even have 3 full sheets leftover. Click on the Audio System link in my signature for pics.

Another sound dampening material that gets high remarks is Second Skin Audio. You get a fair amount of material for the dollar. When considering what dampening material to get and trying to decide on what brand to go with, I usually recommend to a lot of people that they read this web page: Sound Deadener Showdown. The tests and results seem to be real informative and definitely have made me think twice about grabbing stuff off of some some store shelves.

Mike, that's quite an eye-opening review. I've contacted Second Skin to find out how many square feet I'd need to do my doors and rear cargo area, including rear fender wells.

Already, the runner is pretty quiet and solid. I'd like to see if I can take it a step further and reduce the wind noise, and the noise from the drive train in the rear cargo area.

Here's the stuff I lined my '05 Tacoma with. Made a huge difference! The best part was that the rain didn't "ping" on the roof anymore!

I coated the roof and all vertical planes with VMAX, the inner door openings I used VB2HD and for the floor I again used VB2HD then added a layer of VB3.5. It was quieter inside my Tacoma than my new '08 4R.
 
Thanks, SP. I had a couple of Tacomas, too, a 99 and an 06. Nice trucks. I wish the 06 had been a quieter ride, but I'm sure this stuff would have made a difference.

I'm impressed with how quiet my 07 4Runner is, but I want to make it even quieter, which is why I'm looking at this stuff. Winter is nearly here, though, so it may be a spring project, which will give me time to buy speakers and an amp to install while I have everything disassembled.

'07 Deadening install

I bought an '07 in Feb and within a week I was installing Raamat, Polk MMC6500s, Alpine MRP-F450 & Alpine 9857 HU. I don't know how long threads stay on this sight but I did post on my install.
I did all 4 doors Inside & out, One layer on the inside of the outter door skin and another layer on the inside of the inner door.
Closed up all access holes with roof flashing metal etc.
This made a fantastic difference in sound inside the car and really makes a difference in the door speakers sound.
In the spring I'll probably do the rear hatch and any other areas I can get to.

Its nice to install on a new car as you don't have to do so much cleaning for the sticky to stick.

I second the recomendation for Raamat.

Thanks, Chip. That Alpine 450 amp is one I'm considering. Gonna keep the stock head unit and install an amp, and some speakers. Looking at some JL Audio or Polk components for the front doors, and coaxial for the rear. I'd love to install a sub in the factory location, but my system is the non-JBL and so it didn't come with the sub box. I priced this at Partznet and it was over $300, which seemed like a lot for this piece.

Can I ask where you bought the Raamat? How it the world do you install this stuff on the outer skin of the door? Also, how did you attach the roof flashing material to the door? Did you put this on after the layer of Raamat? Or before?

as far as I know, you can only get Raamat from Raam auto. Not sure about the spelling. You should be able to google up there site.
To install the Foil backed deadener inside the door, You have to cut it into pieces and work through the access holes. Its not really difficult, it just takes time. The sheet metal was attatched to the door with SHORT self tapping screws. The screws are used for metal studs etc.
First do inside the door ( outer shell of car ), then cover the access holes on the inner door panel with metal, then cover the Inner door & metal covers with a layer of Raamat.
Now cover it all up with the door panels

Don't forget the speaker install

It's highly addictive. :D I'm currently trying to decide whether to go aftermarket for Nav, or with something like the AVIC-D3.

I've already got amps, speakers, etc and I'm getting anxious to put it in!
