Sound Upgrade.....sort of.

So, I've got an 01' limited, I want to keep the stock 6 disc/HU unless someone has something that blends in just as well, is fairly cheap, and has a changer as well.

Coming from a solara sle with the jbl premium, the stock system on this limited is awful. How much better can it get with the stock head unit and better speakers. I was completely satisfied with the stock-jbl system on my 99 solara, so something comparable would be great.

FURTHERMORE I've already attempted to upgrade the fronts, panels are off....but i've tried getting 2 diffferent 6 1/2's in there but they don't line up with the mounting holes...the magnet seems to be hitting some of the sheet metal behind the plastic mounting plate, and/or the plate itself. Did anyone with a 3rd gen and upgraded speakers have to cut sheet metal???? If not, what speakers do you have? I've tried Alpine SPR-17s and Pioneer TS-A1702C only to get really pissed off.

Also, if I ever do get some installed, the wiring is kind of confusiing- the current speakers seem to be spliced into something from the window unit controls???

Sorry for the book, thanks for the answers!

bump....what can I do to get some fronts installed????? does anyone have any pics of some adapters they made/bought or some speakers that actually fit without any modding?????

help please

I have Boston 6.5 components in mine. No mods needed for the front at all. The woofer dropped right in and lined up with the included adapter plate. Using the factory bracket for the tweets with the included tweeter cup took some time to find a proper fit and the only mod for that was cutting the included adapter cup. It sounds like the issue you are having is the depth of the speakers. Check the size on crutchfield.com and if you need to clear the magnet consider getting a speaker spacer. There should be enough room in the door panel to allow this.
