Source for Remanufactured 1GR-FE?

I have a 2005 4runner which will require headgasket work. One option I am exploring is replacing motor with a remanufacterd 1GR-FE rather than just doing the headgasket only. Current motor is at 150K miles.

any recommendations for a quality source for a remanufactured motor?

Jasper Engines is fairly popular here in the southeast. I am pretty sure they ship anywhere. You would have to call and see about the specifics. I have no personal experience with them.

just confirmed with Jasper that they do NOT have 1GR-FE available.

according to the person I spoke with, they don't even have it normally. Its not a question of nothing being available right now.

Source for quality reman engine looking not so good.

Doing the job would fix both. Those motors should run to 300k pretty easily if you've been good with your oil changes and other maintenance.

from a cost efficiency standpoint a reman engine from a proven place such as jasper would have been a nice option and simply do a motor swap.

Still on the lookout for reman options while i get quotes on headgasket work.

The last time I looked there was an outfit selling rebuilt V6's for around $2500 delivered on eBay. The company had a lot of feedback and it was overwhelmingly positive.

Don't consider this post to be an endorsement for them, but still.. it might be worth checking out. I wouldn't trust it at all if it was a new seller or somebody with negative feedback.

The 4runner I plan on picking up has 220k on it. I've noticed the head gasket complaints on here so I am hoping the motor lasts at least 300k

But I will stay on the look out for a decent deal on a low milage junkyard motor, then just change out the gasket and any other easy to replace parts while I have it sitting on a stand.

Then just swap out the motor one weekend.

I would steer clear of the Ebay $2k remanufactured 1GRFE. I went through the same search recently. I can't find any feedback, reviews, etc on the Ebay sellers outside of Ebay, not a well known reman shop. Since Ebay feedback is within 45 days, it's too short to give opinions on a motor.

I also struck out with Jasper. NAPA sells a reman for about $3700, with a decent warrnaty, but I found a nice used 2011 taco motor with 70k miles for $1900 and went with that. Engine swap should be done next week.

Look for a 06 on car-part.com. Rumor has it that the gasket was changed sometime in 05. You see very few 06 and up on the head gasket threads.

If you can do it yourself or with the help of a knowledgeable friend it is involved, but not terribly difficult. I had a little over 900 in mine for parts, including 240 machine shop. I replaced water pump, all gaskets we came in contact with, all pulley bearings, valve seals, head bolts (sort of). If you do it yourself do yourself a favor and measure the lifter clearance BEFORE you take the heads apart. This way you can order any that may be out of spec. I had one on each head that was loose and one that was tight. we swapped them and they were all in spec.

Speculate it was a poor quality gasket as they changed the gasket along the way.

I personally would never by a remain engine for anything you want to keep. I have toured remain factory's. The engine get completely disassembled and every part goes into piles. The assembly process brings parts from 50 different( how ever many are there that week). So the block comes from a engine with 150k, crank from one with250k, and the pistons and rods from possibly six different. At the time I was there an acceptable rate if return was 10%. Great for some sucks for the 10%. Better to do the work yourself working with the parts you know the history. My motto is I can always try if I fail then I pay for someone to fix it. hg are easy. Get a good service manual read three time, buy your part and get dirty.

Make sure you get the same year engine.

There is a thread on the boards that used to be a sticky on a guy who bought a later 2006+ engine to put in his earlier model 4Runner and couldn't get it to run. Turns out the cam shaft position sensors (I think that's what it was) are set up differently. He had to swap in another engine.
