Spare parts for the trail??

Chill will

So far haven"t had to deal with any major trail repairs just a flat tire so far. I figure the more I wheel it is only a matter of time before I break something. I have a 98 4Runner IFS slighytly modified DD with skid plates, bumpers, sliders, open diff on 265/75/16 MT. All my excursions have been in the Northeast, went down to Rausch Creek twice and ran mostly blue and a few blacks. I am progressing and trying harder lines, but I don't push it too far since I need to drive back home and to work.
So I ask the more expierenced what spare parts should I be bringing with me?

This has come up before - it depends entirely on on how hard you wheel, whether you wheel by yourself, and how far from a parts store you are. I carry fuses, belts, fluids, a cv shaft, and a spare hub. I'm doing tie rod ends later this morning and will throw the better of those in my spares bag as well.

I always go with a group usually there are at least 3 of us. Most of my wheeling is in the Northeast so we are never too far from civilization.

I wouldn't worry about too much in the way of spares, then. As long as there's nearby pavement and somebody to help your rig get there, you'll be fine.

So it looks like I should carry spare cv shafts. So I guess this would be the weak link in my suspension set up? Should I also carry a spare u-joints?

1 or 2 CV shafts. They are the same both sides. I almost always have one spare with me and on longer or more difficult excursions I take two CV's. Also if you change your belts and hoses keep the old ones for spares. I also carry 2 quarts of each fluid and a gallon of Coolant. You may not need it but can always help out another guy on the trail. It is better to prepare for the unexpected and not need it, then be caught unprepared when it happens.

You have a better chance of busting tie rods than CV axles, so make sure you throw a a set of those in the truck.

In the 4 years of wheeling my 98 4 Runner and with several other 4 runner and Tacoma owners I have yet to see a tie rod break. I have seen and repaired several CV's that broke on the trail. Other people may have different experiences and Tie rod ends on solid axles breaking is more common than on an IFS truck. That being said I do not disagree that if you have spare TRE's go ahead and bring them.

You don't happen to be used to Chevies, do you? I've heard that's true of them, but the CV is definitely the weak link in Toyota IFS.

lol yep

i've broken prob a dozen of them. the worst one i was moving about 30mph and the tie rod completely snapped whereas all my other ones just bent. the aftermath..

X2 on the belts, particulary power steering belt. Last time i went wheeling i broke a power steering belt and did not have a spare. Trust me, trying to strong-arm 35's on a rocky trail even for just a few miles is NOT fun.

Well went wheeling this past weekend and broke my first cv Shaft. It wasn't that bad. Since I didn't have a spare I just tied it up out of the way and brought it back to camp and rode shotgun the rest of the day. So I hope to add a spare to my parts bin before I go out again.

yes CVs are the same either side.

when i go wheeling i carry at least two spare CVs, l&r LBJs, fluids; 2-3qt gear oil, 2 gallons coolant, 3 qts atf, 2qts brake fluid. spare radiator hose', spare ATF line(about 6'), about 5' of brake tubing, as well as all the tools i need to do anything with any of those items... i could carry more atf or gear oil but i look at it like this, if i have something that has put a hole in my trans pan, or break a axle housing open, my day is over... i will need to be towed at that point so what difference does it make.

having wheeled a long time with an open front end i have only broken two CVs on the trail... its just a matter of time till i blow one with the locker up there. so thats why i will carry at least two. i have also seen LBJs fail on the trail and that is why i now change mine out every year or 20k whichever comes first, and keep those as spares.
