Just about anything. White lithium in a spray can works. Or good old chassis grease from a gun or a tub. This is not a demanding application, but needs to be done. Also try to get to the gear mechanism.

ok but how? i don't even know there was a crank or where it is. where is the gears and the crank anyway? How do you remove the straps that hold the tire up

You got straps????? The stock set-up you take the jack crank handle (stored under right rear seat) and insert in a hole that you can see to the right of the hatch lock strike. Turning the crank works a windlass that lowers a wire cable inserted into a metal carrier plate in the center of the wheel. If you got straps, something has been done to her....pretty sure '96 are the same as the others...

I would not grease it. It would be a magnet for dust and road grime. Just clean it and check it when you rotate your tires.

I disagree. I have lubed mine up every two years for twelve years. It works perfectly. Retracted, there is not much crud that gets in there. But if you live in the salt belt, it will sure as s--t corrode from salt splash if not taken care of.
