HEY ALL,FOR THOSE WHO HAVE GONE WITH OVERSIZE TIRES THAT WON'T FIT IN THE ORIGINAL SPARE CARRIER.FOUND THIS HITCH MOUNTED CARRIER FOR TIRES UP TO A 40" SPARE TIRE.THE PLUS SIDE IS ITS REMOVEABLE,TRANSFER IT FROM RIG TO RIG.IT SEEMS LIKE A GOOD OPTION IF YOUR NOT WILLING TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE REAR BUMPER TO CARRY YOUR SPARE.NOT SURE ON THE PRICING BUT THE COMPANY SELLS THRU ALOT OF NATIONWIDE OFF-ROAD CHAINS.http://www.tiregate.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=1068

Gotta say that one thing I wish the 4Runner had on it was the old swing-away spare carrier, like the Jeeps have. It would nullify this problem for those of us with bigger tires, for the most part.

My 1991 4Runner had one on it and I like the looks of the thing. Never had much trouble with opening it either, or opening the tail gate.
 
Ive seen them before, I wonder how much they cost ???
but does look like it could get hung up, maybe not, anyone know anyone that has one ???
 
ok I just talked to them (very nice people) they cost $699, they do not have a lock when open, they do that cause the people with the pick ups, that may want to leave the tailgate down, the co. doesnt want the tirecarrier left open, (safety)
So this does look like a decent option..
 
The only thing bad about those (other than how far they stick out the back, looks pretty bad) is that they destroy departure angles. I hit my shackle all the time, let alone a massive carrier that sticks out like that.

Rear bumper/tire carrier is the way to go if you are going to drop $700 on a carrier. You might as well go all the way for twice as much.
 
Looks like an ok alternative to a new bumper/carrier setup. However like some of the negatives already mentioned, not sure that I want my carrier hitch mounted. Seems like it would have some tendency to flop around and make friction noise as well.

MY SPARE ISN'T HELD DOWN BY ANYTHING IN THE CARGO AREA,WITH MY NEW TIRE COMBO THE 285/70-17 ON THE STEEL WHEEL IS A LITTLE HEAVY.IT JUST SITS THERE NO SHIFTING AROUND.:D
 
Loose tire in the back

Dude, you might want to use a strap of some kind to tie it down. if you have a real accident, like a roll over it might come forward and seriously hurt someone

just my 0.2 cents, I always tie down my shovel, axe, highlift etc when I have them in the back

I was with a freind about a million years ago, doing about 70mph we hit some black ice and collided with a tree, everything and I mean everything became a missle in the car, including the rear seat - we were lucky to walk away

YOU GOT ME THINKING,I'M GONNA FIGURE A WAY TO USE THE TIE DOWN RINGS IN THE REAR TO STRAP DOWN THE SPARE.THANKS
