Spare Tire Carrier or Ladder

The 4x4 shop that did the work for me this weekend is able to fabricate a swing out spare tire carrier. More than likely they would use the trailer hitch as the starting point. That is option 1.
Option 2 is to wait for Bajarack to come out with their ladder for the 3rd gen.

I would love opinions as to which one everyone thinks would look better. I do access the rear of the vehicle often, to let the dogs in and out, put stroller in/take it out, etc.

Ladder would be diffecult because the whole rear of the car is the tailgate

Here is my thought on itsince you asked. Do you think you off-road enough or see yourself going down a rock/dirt step on a trail that you will drag your back bumper? IF you think you will be hitting the back bumper much then you would also be hitting the spare tire underneath possibly popping it. I know from the short time I had my swing away on before taking it off to make more mods it looked incredible.

However with your dogs and everything I would probably do the ladder and when I off-road move the tire into the Baja Rack. Just take the time to think it through what would be more usefull to you and your application.

Err.... Neither?? Option 1 just sounds like money being thrown away. IF you are even thinking of off-roading enough to warrant a spare tire carrier, you should also get a full on custom bumper to go with your tire carrier.

Option 2 is also not a wise use of funds, because the ladder would hinder the opening and closing of the rear hatch. Also, you can easily reach the top of the 4Runner without the ladder.

I would rather get something like sliders or an ARB front bumper with that cash.

The ladder is like the Gobbi ladder design, it attaches to the rear hatch and does not hinder the operation of the hatch. The only concern is that the extra 5-10 pounds might add addition wear on the lifts that keep it open.

Just strap the spare to the roof rack, thats the cheapest option
