Spare Tire Orientation

Is the valve stem facing up or down? I have always assumed up, but when I had new tires put on today, the tech told me down. I even questioned him, so he asked another technician who said down as well.

I assume down as to make it easier to periodically check the pressure on the spare

I would assume down, simply because my experience with my FJ Cruiser is that the spare will have a Tire Pressure Monitoring Sensor in it, that may come on in cold weather, and would be a pain in the butt to check/add air.

From the factory, mine was pointing up and the valve stem was not accessible. I flipped it over so I could check the air more easily and haven't had an issue thus far.

Me too. I set it with the valve stem toward to the rear axle to give it a little more clearance when off road. It's a little more reach to check the pressure.

My valve stem is not accessible (facing up; factory) - which makes sense. You add risk of damage if you have it easily accessible, nullifying the whole intent of the spare LOL.

We have a '15 Limited and '17 TRDORP and both face up. Even with a 5 wheel tire rotation on the '15 Limited. Its safer to keep the rim face close to the body work.

Face up for me... wanted to protect the valve and rim face when off-road.

I think its actually easier to get in/out with it face up because you have more clearance for that hanger holder thing.

Dropping the spare isn't a big deal to me, ive done it so many times to work on the suspension, brakes, and fluids that it's second nature... I think it's good to do once in a while anyways for inspection of tire and suspension.

Truck has OBA so even if it was flat I needed it, I got air.

face up for me, but that's because it came that way from the factory...... not saying its better or worse, just saying its not really a concern to me.
