Spare tire questions

So I looked under my truck to check out the condition of the spare tire and to my surprise....big ole goose egg - note to self - never buy a car at night. Nothing there. No chain no nothing. Except for 4 rubber guards.

So 2 questions:

1. Is the spare mounted on the same stock wheels as the rest of the wheels on the truck or is it some steel wheel?

2. Is the lowering mechanism simply a chain with a round disc which is cranked up to hold the wheel? Is the chain easy to feed back in the cranking mechanism?

On my 2001 SR5 it is a steel wheel and not the same as the rims. I have heard that Limited may have a fifith rim. Yes it is a chain and disk. Not sure how hard it would be to replace the chain.

My Limited came with a 16" steel wheel as a spare. Still has the original tire on it and it's in pretty good condition somehow.

Interesting. So if the spare is steel wheel, would this spare work if I do the 199mm Tundra brake upgrade? Or should I buy a regular wheel as a spare. But then the further question would be if the "normal" stock wheel fit in the spare compartment. i am assuming that the steel wheel is different than the aluminum wheel. Thoughts anyone?

If your 4R came with 16'' wheels standard, you are gonna have the larger brakes compared to 4R's with 15'' stock rims. Basically you can't downsize wheel size on 16" equipped 4R's but you can obviously step up from a 15'' to a 16'' wheel on 4R's that came with 15'' 's.

The crank mechanism is not a chain. It's a wire cable. And yes, the aloy wheel fits onto the spare holding bracket that's on the end of the cable. Thats where you put the 'flat tire' after you've changed them over.

Yep, just bought the assembly as you can not buy just the cable. I just made my Toyota dealer $100 richer. I will also buy a steel wheel for a spare so I will not have it as part of the tire rotation.
