Spare Tire?

ok this past weekend, someone decided to they wanted there lane plus my lane to drive in. needless to say i was forced to move over and in the process i ended up scrubbing my front right tire on the curb. now my tire has scrub marks along the whole outside of the tire and looks like crap with the whitewall tore up and black bands.

i am wondering is the spare tire (under the rear) on one of those steel rims or is it a full size rim like the other 4 rims? i can see the tire is a full size and like the other tires, but i really cant tell if its full size rim or one of those spare tire rims?

could i use the spare tire on the front right now and put the scrubbed tire in the spare location?

I'm pretty sure it's a full size spare, just like your regular rims. No donuts for us

i would hate to go out and buy a new tire or swap the tires to blackwall side on all 4 rims.

this way i can save some money and not have to go out and buy some revo's just yet.

another question? the spare tire should be just a drop in replacement correct? or does it need to be balanced before placing it on the hub?

reason i ask is because the only GSP9700 in town is at the chevy dealer.

That, I can't answer for you as I wouldn't know. I would hope that they come pre-balanced.

Good news...
The spare is balanced from the factory.

Bad news...
I also have a sport with the OWL (outlined white letters) trouble is that the tire is mounted with the outside up. So the letters are deformed due to the tire being pulled into the body. This is noticeable. Perhaps you are lucky and will avoid this.

My spare also was at 60+ psi.


The spare rim and tire should be exactly the same as the other four.

The spare is balanced from the factory.

Spare tire is on the same aluminum rim as the rest, and is the same tire as the remaining 4 on the ground. Mine was inflated to 35 psi.

well just got back from moving the spare to the front right. tire still had that blue covering over the tire still. also the tires has 4 indentations on the tire since they had a gorilla tighten the spare up against the spare tire well. otherwise the tire was an even swap from spare location to drive wheel.

have to test the tire out tomorrow when i go to work and see if there is any adverse conditions. seems to me (probably my imagination) that the brakes are acting different and the vehicle now pulls a little to the left. again have to test in the morning when i drive to work at 70-75mph to make sure and when there is no wind out.

i imagine the indentations will flatten out after awhile since there is nothing pressing up against the tire anymore. plus road bumps, etcs should flex the sidewalls to help this process.

also the raised letters where not deformed, so i got lucky and the indentations where actually on the sidewall and not on any letters.

one last note, the spare tire/rim was way more dirty than my drive wheels where.

You sure the pulling is not from hitting the curb with the old tire?

I believe the indentations will go away after a while.

Pulling to one side... I assume that you have roughly equal tire pressure on both side? Low tire pressure on one side will causing pulling (to the low side). If pressure is ok, did you hit the curb enough to effect alignment on that wheel?

How does the tread depth on your spare compare with the remaining three tires? Apparently, the use of tires with significantly different tread depth (30% or greater differential) causes drivetrain stress. This would apply to the rear wheels on 2WD and all four wheels on 4WD/AWD. I dunno how significant this effect really is, just been reading too much lately...

runner has about 2.7k miles on it. tire pressure is the same. i only scrubbed the curb with the side of the tire, hence the reason i swapped the spare and front right tire. it might be just my imagination probably. it wasnt pulling before i swapped tires, only after i swapped them. it only cost $10 to swap them around, so if it persists, i may swap them back out again and just live with the scrubbed sidewall. may have to use some elbow grease and try to fix up the sidewall with some cleaning and touch up i guess.

have to wait and see.
