Spare tire

What's the best way to remove the spare tire? Is my truck supposed to come with some kind of tool to remove it? If I don't have that tool, how can I remove it?:shrug:

I believe the jack handle is required to lower the spare. It should stick through a hole in the rear bumper and you'll twist it to lower or raise the tire.

Ya there is supposed to be a crank under the rear passenger seat. It has like a 1/2 square piece on the end. You could probably find one in the salvage yard, or if you are feeling handy make your own.

hulk 311 I am suspecting you lack an owners manual.

There is a slight variation in design over the 3rd gen years. Practice ahead in lowering and removing and replacing your spare so you will be prepared should you ever need to do it-in traffic pull way off the road as much as humanly possible as this is how folks get hurt every single day in America...

You can always use a socket wrench and few long extensions (or one really long one). 1/2" drive IIRC. Extensions have the same square headed tip as the removal tool does. Works great.

Are you sure you don't have the factory jack and lug wrench?

Not sure where the jack and lug wrench are on the 97 but on my 99 they're under the rear passenger seat. Flip the right side passenger seat bottom forward and there is a little door there on the floor, the jack and lug wrench are in a compartment there.

That's where they are on my 97.

You might try a 1/2" extension with a universal joint at the base of it... just try to snake it up there... just a thought... shooting in the dark.

The replacement part is like $40 at the stealership.

Or you could find somebody else with the tool, borrow it, then keep it ties down in the interior cargo area.

If the handle is missing, a 3/8" socket extension 24" long and a ratchet work well. Much cheaper than OEM and handy for other things too. I had to replace all of mine when I purchased, jack, jack handle, tire tool, and spare tire tool.
