Speaker replacement

2004 Limited w/ JBL

I need to replace the speakers in the rear pillars as they are crackling and making distortion which I presume is either age or they're busted for some other reason (I don't pump the volume).

What are some of the best speakers out there for this with easiest install? I have never done this before but I can't imagine it's too difficult. I was looking at Crutchfield's website but there are honestly so many options. What is everyone's choice?

Are there instructions somewhere on how to do the replacement too?

In my opinion replacing rear pillar tweeters would be tricky and counter productive. That original JBL Synthesis is something, with 10 speakers and one amp. I'm still uncertain about what purpose rear pillar or central tweeters served, other than created 'surround' effect, source is still stereo. You might struggle to find the right speaker as impedances are weird on this system and doesn't really match modern equivalents. You would probably be better off to replace the whole stereo with new HU and speakers (or amps and subs if you like), original JBL sound quality is marginal at best. I just gutted the whole system and put it in the trash bin.

I don't think I have the technical know-how to do something like a total replacement (and honestly wouldn't mind doing an upgrade) unless there were exact instructions/video on what to do. I would pay someone if it was reasonable assuming I buy a decent set. What did you mean by HU? What set did you buy?

HU - Head Unit. That thing in the dash.

No, it won't be reasonable. To replace the entire system requires replacing the headunit (cheap), adding cable converters to allow the steering wheel controls to still work, replacing all the speakers (pulling off the door cards), replacing the amplifier (you'll need to locate space for the new one), and replacing the subwoofer (which will at least require modifying the existing subwoofer box or putting a removable box in the cargo area). Add more money if they insist on new wiring and even more if you add soundproofing to the doors while you have the door cards off.
