Special order: Am I doing it wrong?

The sliding cargo tray isn’t really an aftermarket thing. And building one could be fun. Or not.

I know that among my fellow physics teachers there is an adage that applies to building apparatus for use in the classroom. “Why buy something for $50 when you can build it yourself for $60.”

Several members have done this, I know because i sold mine to someone who installed it with no issues. Here's one link

There is no such thing as special order. What they can/will do, is track down the configuration you are looking for and help route it to your region if they can find it. It may be a waiting game, but worth it if aren't in a hurry. Good luck.

Please read my post(s) on the first page. Custom configurations can be order from Toyota. There is limitations to this but things can be customized with a willing and helpful dealer.

Yep, sold mine. Helped the old guy install it too. You only need to find the mounting hole with the factory weld nut and drill some sheet metal with a step bit. Took 15-20 minutes with a total install and swap time under an hour.

D: I’m going to print you a map of other nearby Toyota dealerships. Fine people, all of them...

It’s not quite like that. But after searching and having no luck for a week that began in mid October, I made an appointment to speak with a dealer about placing an order.

The salesman confirmed that the configuration I was looking for, while technically possible, did not exist in the Western US. He declared it to be a unicorn.

The next week, he informed me that he alerted his fleet manager. His fleet manager would seek approval from Toyota/Japan.

Two weeks after that, I was told that my request was approved. I inquired as to VIN and an ETA.

Don’t call us; we’ll call you has been the response since then. That approval from Japan was apparently just “initial approval”.

The 2020 ORP w/KDSS but no moonroof in any color does seem to be a rig that is not manufactured, according to inventory searches of Edmunds, cars.com, AutoTrader, CarGurus, and buyatoyota.com. Filtering for BR and (especially) the sliding cargo tray instantly zero out any search results.

I had previously thrown myself to the wolves via TrueCar, and so now and then, dealers alert me to near misses still in allocation. (2020 BR ORP w/KDSS and no moonroof. No sliding tray and tarted up with a bunch of things I never really wanted).

I’m patient enough to wait for now. But concerned that I don’t really seem to have “final approval” from Japan, with a VIN and an ETA.

Month One of the search comes to a close feeling unproductive.

Anyone order a similarly “exotic” 4R unicorn from Japan? How’d it go?

I had the exact same experience in 2010.
I went to at least ten dealers in the LA area (Including Longo) and they all promised they could get what I wanted. Six months later and not a word. Some salesman will only search as far as there own Inventory.

I sent Emails to Dealers in Nevada, Arizona, Utah and Northern California.
I got a hit from A dealership in Las Vegas. I flew up and picked up a new 2011 4 Runner. It had everything I wanted on it.
That was 9 years ago and it appears nothing has changed.

I while back a forum member posted the Toyota allocations stats and how Toyota has different builds for the different geographic areas of the USA.

There are a few people on the forum that have documented going out of state to get what they want. You may want to do the same. All the dealerships sell on line and they have online pricing.

The down side of buying out of state.
Price of your flight. Get a round trip just in case ( have the dealer pick you up at the airport)
YOU will have to have the truck smog checked
YOU will pay taxes for the county you live in
YOU will have to register it in the state you live in.
This means going to the DMV and waiting in line.

GOOD LUCK and don't Settle.

Buying a NEW car in another state is just begging Governor Hair Gel's shit DMV and Smog Police to bend you over and go in dry.

Given your referenced location and verbal proclivities, I'd assume you either know a lot about "going in dry," or want to.

I have never seen an ORP without a sunroof, and I have looked at hundreds in person or online. That's one of the reasons I prefer the standard OR, but also because I don't want that crappy softex. Paying extra for vinyl seats is just wrong.

In 2017 I bought an 18 ORP with just the features I wanted. I guess I got lucky because I found it at a local dealer’s lot. My prime requirement was the silver color. I’ve had dark colored vehicles and they get fricken hot in the CA sun. The other requirement was no moonroof. Likewise I’ve had them before and rarely used them, due to hot sun, rattles, leaks, etc. I got KDSS as a bonus, which I really like. And no cargo tray; didn’t want it. All the other premium features are great. The dealer threw in the roof rack bars, tonneau cover, and beefier rubber mats. I was happy with the deal.

I’d recommend searching for, or ordering, the vehicle with your must-haves. Then compromising on the nice-to-haves.

4Runners can be ordered, been there, done that.

I used an auto broker like AAA. They work directly with multiple dealerships and can get exactly what you want. It might take time, if it needs ordered. They don't deal with the flunky lot sales people either, they get way higher up the chain.

cars like the 4 runner isn't custom made to order from japan like some cars.

Dealerships usually can see whats coming in from the boat or they will do a dealer trade with a nearby dealership to get you the color/combo that you want. They usually preorder popular colors a few months in advance.

And there’s a Barcelona Red ORP with no moonroof at my dealership in Sacramento. They got it from a dealer in Reno. So close to the one I’m ordering. But no sliding tray and (more importantly) no KDSS. For a minute, the salesguy was certain that all ORPs had KDSS and that KDSS would be in the rig but not on the Monroney. I was happy to educate him out of that notion.

I did not say they didn't exist, I was saying I've never seen one. Each and every ORP I have looked at has a moonroof. Not sure why that is. And, it's annoying because I, too, don't want one. I have had nothing but trouble with them every time I have had one.

The trouble with all the inventory search pages and apps is that some will let you filter for installed options, but not for options *not* installed. Seems like a simple thing to code for and create a UI for. Moonroof: one click=green checkmark, two clicks=red X. Running boards: two clicks please!

Nearly all the ORPs do have moonroofs. It’s as if the option is—in fact—required.

Seems once you find one w/o moonroof, it doesn’t have KDSS either.

If it has KDSS and no moonroof, no way in hell it has a sliding tray or is Barcelona Red. BR seems to be the rarest non-Pro color.

It's your money, but at the end of the day you might wind up spending a few grand more to have a truck exactly the way you want it that no dealer wants to go through the trouble of selling instead of just haggling for what the inventory has to offer in your area, or even in CA.

If saving a bundle was my overriding priority, I wouldn’t be buying new.
