Special Order ETA

I'm looking to buy a silver Trail with KDSS, nav, and tow package but am unable to find them anywhere. A couple of dealers have said that I would have to special order it and that it would take 4 - 6 months. Does this sound right to you guys/gals? I understand that the tragedies in Japan have caused delays but that sure seems like a long time. I've looked at the inventories of many major dealers in CA and have yet to find one with these exact options.

Has anyone else here had to wait that long?

:thanks:

When I was shopping for mine, I was told the same due to the earthquake in Japan. I wound up going out of my region to find the one I wanted and had it delivered. I also found that dealers were less willing to negotiate as well.

Not completely sure. I've been told end of May to June for my silver trail with KDSS and nav. Not one dealer around here can be certain and I believe they are all full of ****.

This is my first 4Runner!! I can't wait till I get it!

4-6 months.....Heck, the 2012's will be out before then. It's been hard for anybody to get TE's with NAV out in CA as the region didn't order them like that.

As said ,it's best to look out of region or else just get one with KDSS/No Nav and add your own. You could get a killer aftermarket Nav set up for the $2500 Toyota charges on the TE's.

There is no such option for tow package as all the 5th Gen 4Runners have it.

Good Luck!

I'm in the same boat. Dealer had a Silver TE with Nav/KDSS "locked on"...Never happened. Found one in Miami, but it sold. Cant find one anywhere on the East coast...I'm pissed.

They seem to be getting rarer and rarer. It's been reported on here, not a single TE in our Gulf States region either.

You all might have to start a thread on here for people to post where they know a new TE is on the lot. I think Denver region had some.

When I was looking for a silver te w/kdss wo/nav, every dealership told me if i put a $1000 down they might have one for me in 6 months. That was in the denver area.

I have an autobroker I go through, and he is a great resource (denver area). He has a few people that will search for your vehicle high and low, in-state and out-of-state. He found one in Ft Collins but that was snatched up pretty quickly and i didn't act fast enough. I didn't even know that he found one in Colorado Springs that had been "sold" but he had his name on it just in case, and I got the call that the deal fell through and he snagged it for me :) I got lucky! That was 2 weeks ago.

I lucked into to mine by finding a bozo at a dealership that was willing to look in the system and tell me where my Trail. I called the dealer, haggled my a_ _ off, put $500 on my card to hold it, and flew out the next morning. The dealer picked me up at the airport, drove me to the dealership. I haggled more once I got there, bought it for $37,500 with 5 years of service, 100,000 mile warranty, plus TTL. It all went down in two days. If you find one, you have to jump on it and have your credit card in your hand. ACT FAST, REALLY FAST IS KEY.

Best bet is to find someone on the inside at Toyota that will help you out.

I just bought mine last week and was told at least a month if not two for any special orders. I was lucky enough to come across a TE with KDSS, Nav, running boards, tow package, and in my color - it had just come off the truck and had 1 mile on it. I was the only test driver and bought it outright.

This dealer is one of the biggest in the area, and they said that TE's sell quite quickly, and that they routinely try to get them from other dealers in the area for folks who are looking for them.

I went to three different Toyota dealerships and heard the same thing from them all. Prius are in the same boat - one of the dealers I talked to usually gets 6-8 of those per week, and they are getting 6 per *month* now. They also said a large portion of the parts being made in Japan are going to existing customers for repairs. I don't know if I believe that last part since I doubt existing customers need the same types of parts that a new car line would manufacture, but who knows.

Wouldn't be surprised if it took a couple of months to get one. 6 seems like they're just stalling you until the 12's get out.

Northern California is where I got mine. There were a few a few weeks ago. Most had KDSS and Nav.. Southern Calif. did not get any 2011 in that combo. You can see what is in a region by going to buyatoyota.com and using the new inventory search.

I did a special order of Silver TE with NAV and KDSS around Feb 12. They told me that it would be up to 90 days of wait time. In march I checked back with them and they said they could not allocate the 4R I wanted in Feb production so I had to wait for April production. Then next day they notified me that they manage to allocate one from March production. Mine finally arrived on 04/08.
So mine is actually is not a real special order but a preference order I think.

Silver is rare, virtually extinct. Black is hard to find, but there are a few out there...Magnetic gray seem to be more prevalent.

I have called at least 20 dealers in 5 or 6 States on the right coast...

I might get a black one, because I'm impatient. It's my favorite color, and my second choice.

Wow, and here I thought my silver Trail w/KDSS and Navi was common. Maybe I should sell it, even with the 20k highway miles on her. Interesting information.

Ditto this--> Best bet is to find someone on the inside at Toyota that will help you out.

I "ordered" mine the day before xmas 12/24/10. A 2011 Black Trail with Nav. Dealer says, "no problem I'll find you one and get it here (Oregon) in 2 weeks!" After two weeks, they came back to me and said, um, there is no black TE w/Nav anyplace in OR, WA, CA, ID, MO, NV, UT, AZ, basically none on the entire west coast. So dealer says we have to order it, I say no problem order it!

Dealer said no problem, take 6-8 weeks. It arrived in my hands on 3/20 - 3months after my original request on 12/24/10. One week or so after I had it, the earthquake hit. Or maybe the earthquake came just before I had it in hand, I seem to remember talking with the dealer about the problems in Japan. In any case, the timing for me was close to the initial earthquakes and subsequent issues for Japan.

As it turns out, since TE Black w/Nav is a standard production model, they can't just "Order" one, they have to wait until one is produced and put in a request for it. So the dealer checks the shipped vehicles every week on a computer to see what is available and they request delivery of said vehicle.
If they miss it and someone else requests it first they are SOL unless they can trade the other dealer out of it somehow. And if too many requests come in for other vehicles on the ship, the ship goes to the port that is closest to the most requests. Does that make sense? So even if your dealer gets in the request, first one on the west coast and the rest of the shipment is marked for the east coast, you are SOL. (this according to my dealer)

In my case the dealer missed a TE Black w/NAV in January that ended up in Alaska, and missed another one in FEB that went to Chicago. After missing the only 2 produced in 2 months, my dealer started checking the "computer" everyday. (Mostly due to my hounding them!) Technically the dealer also missed the one I got in March!! The one in March that I got, actually went to a Dealer in Washington State, because that's where the shipment docked. But they had no buyer for it, so my dealer made a trade of some sort and got it for me.

It seems the the '11 Black TE w/Nav are only being produced at the rate of 1 per month. I'm not sure about the Silver. And with all the troubles in Japan, I'm sure that number of 1 per month is down. They totally stopped production for a period of time.

My dealer also told me a few other things.
1) They (Toyota) base the production runs on what was sold last year. Black was not popular last year I guess.
2)They only make "special orders" if you request something that is offered but not standard. ???? I know that sounds crazy, so I said, "huh, what" and they explained it this way, I would have to order a Black TE w/ Purple interior but since they don't offer purple interior on the T4R it could never happen. So to get a special order you would have to want some quirk in the major options, that was odd. Major options are like the paint/interior/engine/drivetrain/2 vs 4wd, etc.

So in other words, I took that to mean, Toyota does not do "Special Orders", they just make every available mix of options on every available color.

3) All the misc options like running boards, floor mats, remote start, blu logic, cargo net, etc are not factory, the dealer adds them to get the biggest bang for the buck. That's not to say some models don't have these options from the factory, because i guess some do, with the make one of everything scatter shot approach.

So in my case the '11 TE w/Nav was bare bones no added floor mats, cargo nets, running boards, nothing. The dealer added the floor mats for me at cost since I had to wait so long. If I wanted running boards it was like $1000, when I knew I could get them myself for a 1/3 of that price or less, I passed on them.

It's kind of the "If they build it, You will buy it mentality"

Hope that helps

Use the BuyaToyota.com website. Put in the city and state or zipcode. Then use the search inventory function. Select 4Runner then Trail Edition and it will give you a list of what's available. Select the one you want and it will present you the option to request a quote. At that point, you have to select the dealer. It will list the dealers that have that color/model/features. I just tried San Jose, CA for you and it shows that Capitol Toyota and Piercey Toyota have them. The good news is if you know where they are, you can have other dealers in the area also trade for it. Worked for me.

Yeah, it shows a lot of dealers "have them" in the online world...In the real world, they have none.

Luckily I found one, in black with KDSS/nav, that I pick up on Saturday, in North Carolina, who got it from another dealer 120 miles away....Getting this one was like watching the Twilight saga...PAINFUL!
