Special Ordering from the Factory

In some of the threads I have read, others have indicated that they have special ordered their vehicles. I did not know this was an availiable option. I noticed Toyota does not make every option combination availiable in all regions so I guess this would be the only justification to special order a vehicle. Does Toyota put any restrictions or limits on what a customer can order? For example can a customer order leather seats found on a limited model for an SR5? The next time around I may give this a try. What kind of deposit is one putting down for a special order?

From what I understand, Toyota offers specific option combinations for each trim level. But each option combination listed for a particular trim level is not offerred in every region. If your region does not order a specific option combination listed for your desired trim level, then I think you can "special order" it if you can a get a dealer that will do it for you. From what others have posted, not all dealers seem interested in putting forth the extra effort.

I think that even when you special order from the factory you can only order what is approved for that region.

The reason why you might want to special order is if the regionally approved options that you want aren't on any one's lot.

For instance, I wanted side curtain air bags and salsa red. No one had one so I ordered it and waited.

It was worth the wait for me to get my vehicle exactly the way I wanted it.

I had my truck ordered. A special order just means you're going to get a truck with only the options you specify and a configuration (option cominbation) that is not normally ordered in your region. Usually deposits are required and some dealer charge MSRP for special orders.

Toyota will build any vehicle with any options that is outlined in the brochure and online for each particular trim. However, whether you find a particular configuration is up to your regional distributor. What I mean by that is for 2006, navigation was available on any of the three 4Runner trims. But probably no region ordered a SR5 with navigation, doesn't mean you can't get it that way, just won't find it on the lots. Toyota will not build what's not available on that trim, i.e. X-REAS or leather on a SR5, or rear air suspension on an trim other than a V8 Limited with X-REAS. In my region, the only 2WD is SR5 V6, everything else is 4WD.

Check out a 4Runner brochure to see what factory options are available for your model (SR5 vs SE vs Limited). You can't order things that aren't available (like a 3rd row on a SE for example), but you can have leather installed in an SR5 or SE (but this is a port or dealer installed option - not a factory option). Most common special orders are Side Air Curtains/Side Air Bags, Sunroof in a 3rd row (now available), steering wheel controls on a non-JBL unit...

I had to special order mine because they are not building the Limited models with the X-REA'S suspension in any region.

Plus Nautical Blue is one of two colors Toyota does not produce many of. Salsa red is the other color. Toyota sure does love grey, white, and black though.

I noticed in Canada Nautical Blue is only availiable with Stone interior but in the U.S it is availiable with Stone and Taupe. In Mexico they don't sell the Salsa Red or the Nautical Blue. Interesting company Toyota is.

So if I want a new Sport Edition V6 4x4 (Titanium Metallic) with the NAV system and Rear Sear Entertainment would I have to order that special from the factory? How much of a deposit would I have to put down? How close can a dealer get to invoice prices on vehicles special ordered, since they do not really have any cost involved in it.

Yes, you can have nav and RSES on a Sport Edition. Member matoolie has the exact config.

The deposit amount depends, usually $500 to $1000. I didn't put one down because my rep knew I was serious about the 4R and I had a Tacoma ordered from him about four months earlier. For the Taco he took my credit card number, but didn't charge it unless I backed out.

The price it'll cost you will vary. How bad do you want such a configuration? How willing is the rep and dealer willing to help you? I paid about $250 over Edmund's TMV and $750 over invoice before TTL and rebate, though floormats weren't listed in the TMV and invoice. My rep helped me cause I was a repeat customer. On the other hand, his boss, dealership owner, was wondering who my rep was going great lengths for. There's no cost involved for the dealer, but the dealer is giving up one of their allocated vehicles to get a particular config and they now have a 4Runner that you could've settled on. Because such a configuration doesn't exist, they probably won't negotiate. When I was shopping for mine Oct 2005, a cocky dealer said "OTD price about MSRP for a '05, MSRP plus TTL for a '06." Shop around, you'll find a dealer and rep who's willing to help and a price that's agreeable.
