Speed Limiter?????

okay so heres the story....
I was on the highway when a motorcycle comes up behind me and gets very impatent, I need to get over and he is so close behind me that he couldn't have been more than a foot from my rear bumper (doing 70mph no less) i put on my turn signal to get over for my exit, and he doesn't let up so i start to brake and he decides to go between me and the car next to me (LA style) and clipe my passenger mirror. he speeds off and I floor it trying to catch him as he takes the next exit, I get up to 90mph and the flooring it the truck refused to go any faster, I gave up and slowed down and got off. Now my dad had an identical T4R when I was a kid (im 20 now) accept for a supercharger, trd headers, and trd exhaust, and I know he has taken it over 110. I've got a K&n cold air intake (no check engine light, injecters adjusted) and a flow master exhaust. the only thing I can think of is my t4r is origonaly from california, so i'm not sure if along with other emission equiptment, there was a speed limiter. (I held 90 for a good while flat ground)

tried again later today and agian, wouldn't go over 90 both times etc was engaged.

My 96 was originally from CA and I've had it past 100mph a few times. There are long straight stretches of highway with no traffic at times, and it is seemed the safest place to see what my truck can do. I don't recommend it, there could be DEER!
 
So aside from the Supercharger and the Headers they were identical trucks? :ybrick:

If you were holding a speed, full throttle and you weren't going any faster, It's cause thats all she can give you. You could tell if it had a limiter because the truck would start slowing down then re-accelerating or stutter at full speed. I've never tripped a limiter that held a smooth, constant speed.

FWIW, I haven't gone over 90MPH since I was a kid (like when I was 20.):naughty:
 
The limiter on all the tacomas and 4runners I have been in has been about 110. Havent gone over 95 in a couple years though and dont plan to.
 
I hit 100 last week in 4th, i wanted to see if i could get past 105 cause i just changed my plugs and fuel filter, unfortunately there were too many cars ahead and i abandoned the idea.

You are no longer a kid at 20?

My engine is stock, no supercharger, and I've had it just a hair under 100 and it still felt like it had some left. Pretty smooth for a truck, too. Not that I would recommend it.

I am sure it is the same in LA, however my experience is that sometimes driving in CT/Boston/NYC/Jersey, sometimes the speed of traffic can be very high, close to 85.

The first time I was driving in Boston, I was in the right lane going 80 and people were passing me, including state police going much faster.

It surprise me about this when I was driving to a place above Boston in 2 cars (me in a beetle diesel, my dad in a jetta) from CT and we are on the Mass pike cruising at 90-95 in the left lane, and we still got passed by people.
 
I think it's actually at 107 to be more specific. I hit it in my Tacoma once when I passed a line of like 20 slow drivers. Definitely glad it's there because there's no way you should be going any faster than that in these things. In my 4Runner, I hit 95 when I drove it home going down a big hill and wasn't paying attention on how fast I was going. That's the fastest I've been in it. Either way, I'd doubt you'd be able to catch a guy on a bike in these things.
 
When the 3rd gen 4Runner came out, Toyota stated they were governed to 106 mph.

So if you had managed to catch the guy on the bike, what would you have done?

Yes, this exactly. I was in a diesel Jetta.

I would not drive a 4Runner if I lived up there. You actually need a new sports car if you don't want to look death in the face.

drove at about 107 mph for about 45mins out in nevada somewhere, came down a big hill got teh speed up and keep it going on the flats, nothing out there but some crazy massive submarine base.

Haha, I thought about that after i decided to slow down... Although I do keep a machete in the truck.....

Shot in the dark here, but do you have any other performance issues? Sluggish when passing or anything? Is it possible you're only running with 5 cylinders or something and not getting a CEL for some reason?
