A few days ago I got a check engine light and my speedometer and odometer quit at the same time. Today the light did not come on but the speedo and odo still do not work. Any suggestions. Thanks.

I have a 92 toyo pickup and I know the speedo and odo and (and some of the rear lights ... cannot recall which ones) are tied to the same circuit. I was rear-ended and it shorted out one of my rear lights thus blowing a fuse. My speedo and odo didn't work until I repaired the short and replaced the fuse.

Short answer, check your fuse panel.

im thinking broken speedo cable, since it's just speedo/odo.........altho, not sure when it was changed to electronic, i think in 94

Well, you definitely need to determine what kind of speedo it is (cable or electronic). If it's electronic, then trace the circuits feeding into your instrument cluster.

If it's a cable based system, then just check the cable. If the cable is good, then perhaps the speed/odo unit itself has failed (have no idea of that ever happens or not). I'm not sure about the easiest way to check the cable short of removing the instrument cluster.

Update: not having enough time to really look into it, I broke down and took the 4Runner in to a mechanic. They found a sensor on the transmission that had gone bad. The bad news, the replacement is only available through Toyota and costs $317.00.:jaw drop: :sobbing:
