Speedo and tach stopped working

The speedometer and tach stopped working in my 2000 4runner. This has happened twice within the last week or so. The first time i disconnected the battery and it worked for a day or two. The second time it happened the speedo stayed on 45mph but the tach went to 0 while driving. The speedometer stayed at 45 even when the truck was turned off. I disconnected the battery and the speedo needle went to 0 and the tach was working again. Any ideas as to what is causing this?

Check the speed sensor on the transmission and that the wiring on the sensor is secure.

4runners use ABS to monitor speed. OP The speed sensors are your ABS. Each wheel has a sensor going to it. Could be that those are bad, maybe dirty or you have some other issues. Pull them, clean them and try again. I had similar issue. For the life of me I couldn’t figure it out. So I installed a Tacoma speed sensor which goes behind the transfer case. And I wired it to my Speedo.

My bad, I had been working on a 4Runner lately and the parts diagram showed a speed sensor. That must be only for non-ABS versions, which I'm told are quite rare.

Mostly if you have any kind of ABS issue the ABS light will let you know. I am curious what exactly is the cause of this. As it sure sounds like the Signal isn't making it to the gauge cluster or the gauge itself is dying.
