Already answered in another thread, but yes, it would. You can replace the signal with an electric speedo drive on the tail housing of the transmission and wire it in place of the signal from the ABS system.

Hello, first off thank you OP for a great thread and easy to follow what the solution is.
I had the exact same problem, Speedo and odo stopped, no cruise control and the brake, vsc, abs, check engine lights all came on.
I bought a used module on EBay and installed it, the Speedo and odo and cruise started working immediately but all of the lights are still on. I unplugged the battery for about 30 minutes but the lights are still on a soon as it starts up and idles.
Is there a trick to clearing out the lights so they don’t come back?

If I recall correctly, I had to use an OBD scanner to clear the codes. They're super cheap (like $10 for Bluetooth ones that work with Android phones ... iPhone not so sure). To be honest I would have thought disconnecting the battery would do it, but those OBD scanners are useful anyway so probably worth a try.

My son was looking into buying a 2002 4Runner. During our test drive the ABS, VSC, TRAC, Check Engine light went on and speedo stopped working. The seller said she'd have the dealer diagnose. Dealer's response was that it was a 6000$ part being the all in one brake master cyl/ABS computer which I figured was wrong after reading posts about dealer telling people this which is wrong on the 01/02 models as these are separate. Seller knocked off 8K of the price bring price down to 2k. Bought a used ABS/TRAC computer off of ebay and replaced. All lights off and speedo started working again! Only took about 15 minutes to do.. probably 1/2 time spent looking for the tools! .. spent 200$ for the part.. later saw them for 100$..

Reviving an old thread. My 2001 4Runner had the same issues. Speedometer and odometer stopped working. Took it to the mechanic and they asked me to buy the part from Toyota and they would install it. I'm somewhat handy, so read the thread, bought the part on ebay and decided to do it myself. Simple swap (except for the space you have to work with). Speedometer and odometer now work, and the xmas lights shut off after 10 min of driving. I bet had I brought it back to them, they would've charged my $500 for a simple swap.

Is there a procedure to replace the ECM? Do I have to go to the dealership to have it programmed by pulling the relevant data off of my old one?

They have to match part numbers exactly and in the 3rd gens they are plug a play. If the part numbers do not match. The ecm probably will not work.

So the Part Number is 89540-35270 which matches the same exact part number that I received from the dealer, who quoted the part at $2600. Found the part on ebay for $215 + shipping.
How do I know whether this part can be plug and play? My car is currently sitting in the dealer's service lot and I was planning to take this module to the dealer to have it programmed and installed once it arrives. That would be "2 hours" of labor totaling ~$300 in addition to the ~$300 I already spent in troubleshooting and the $215 for the part. That would put me a bit over $800 for this repair.
If I can avoid the $300 in programming and installation, that would make me very happy.
Just looking for some assurances that this is a plug and plan install.

The abs ecm does not require any programming

Where is the ECM located on the ‘02? I see some posts saying it’s on the driver kick panel and I saw elsewhere that it’s located under the passenger side ABS behind the glove compartment.
Anyone have reference to a procedure?

Sit in drivers seat left foot on carpet rubber foot pad Trac/ABS module is above your foot on firewall way up in there.
Two bolts 4 connectors plug n play, may require DTC reset when good one is installed.
2 modules are available: 15" wheels 2 or 4 wheel drive, 16" wheels 2 or 4 wheel drive.
I bought a used module on ebay installed myself 3-2017 been working fine since.

Got a 3rd gen a while ago (2001 Limited 4WD with the 5VZ-FE). It has all the warning lights mentioned ON and the speedo/odometer don’t work at all.
I took it to a shop yesterday and had the codes read. The only code I got back is P0500 which I was told at the shop is the Vehicle Speed Sensor located on the tranny. It showed no codes for the ABS and only read “ABS not equipped”. After testing all the relays/fuses and connections to the ABS Control Module the shop owner concluded that the ABS control module (89540-35270) which is located under the dash close to the fuse box on the driver side is faulty.
I have read on here that a bad ABS control module causes all the warning light to come on and also stops the odo and speedo from working. The shop owner said that replacing the bad speed sensor would fix the odo and speedo at once.
As you all may know the ABS control modules can be quite costly, so, before I go ahead and purchase one I want to know your thoughts. Could the control module really be at fault or is there something else I can test or do to ensure that the module is indeed the faulty one?
(I also attempted to read the ABS codes manually using a jumper wire, however, no codes were shown and the ABS light didn’t blink at all).

Find another shop who knows enough about 3rd gen 4Runners to know how to pull ABS codes. If your shop thinks that they can pull ABS codes via the OBDII port on these cars they have no business diagnosing an ABS issue on them. You are on the right track with jumping the ABS port for codes. This post gives instructions on pulling the ABS codes. Did you follow those instructions?

All 3 of the readers show ABS not equipped because the ABS system doesn't communicate with the OBDII system. That message doesn't indicate any ABS problem at all let alone one that would warrant replacing the ABS ECU.
If you have a P0500 and your speedometer doesn't work I'd be looking at fixing that issue first (By diagnosing the P0500 not by replacing the ABS ECU) and seeing if it fixes your ABS and VSC issues. I'm not familiar enough with the ABS system on the 2001, but the ABS expecting a reading from the VSS and not getting one or getting a faulty one due to the P0500 error could certainly be causing all of your problems.
