Speedometer / Odometer / VSC Light

Well given the research I have completed while at work, I have determined that the VSC/ECU may be failing. The speedo comes and goes with the odometer. The VSC light came on and has stayed on. The unit has 400,000 + miles so I am guessing it is time.

Could also be the speed sensor. More likely than the ECU. No CEL? No P0500?

XC, my experience with the trac module though limited, tells me it's good or it's bad type of thing with regards to the module itself. The 01 I just purchased in Feb had all the idiot lights on and no Odo/speedo function with CEL that are indicators for being Trac module, Trac module was the problem. At the moment your truck is not telling you much about what direction to take. One thing I noticed in troubleshooting was that at the module most of the connector wires were bent/kinked like the PO had been putting his foot on the wires. I thought maybe a broken wire could be the cause. Ha do you have big feet?

And by the way, those 4:56 gears I bought from you way back are still running fine. IIRC was you I bought them from.

Along the lines of not having any direction to go. There are a lot of inputs and outputs for the Trac module. The FSM has good info for dealing with your issue though none conclusive, it is written in a way knowing the Tech has a new one or known good one sitting on the shelf. IMO give it some time or try the test procedures in FSM.

Holy cow.......I'm on my 2nd set of 4.88's since the 4.56's. Glad they are humming along. I miss the days of 285's and 4.56's. Simple, better gas mileage, less breakage, etc.

Yes Sir, that's why I settled on them. Had the rear e-locker, ARB installed up front. CV's have popped twice, I can live with that.
About your problem, the 01 & 02's use the same Trac, VSC, ABS module. From the indicators you say are showing your missing some I had. Have you checked your idiot bulbs in gauge cluster? Mine had ABS on, Trac off on, VSC off on, Brake warning on, no speedo, no odometer, P0500 fault code, a code for speed sensor forgot number, speed sensor was not bad.
Went the salvage yard route for module $250 fleabay, came with 90 day warranty.

So there are 4 abs wheels sensors, but is there also a sensor on the outboard portion of the t-case.....my speedo it intermittent and I'm wondering if the teeth have worn off the unit in the t-case of one exists.

on my truck, a JDM unit with multi-mode 4WD and ABS but no VSC/Trac, the speedometer is linked to the speed sensor at the end of the transfer case. so that sensor could be damaged in your case.

The transmission shifting is linked to the speed sensor in the transmission.

I'll have a look, the shifting is fine (less a leak from a seal up front).

I removed the transmission speed sensor and cleaned it. There was some metal debris but not much. With it removed I drove the truck, the speedometer responded (still does sometimes) but would not shift. I ordered a new transmission speed sensor (OE $40 shipped). We will see.

I did have a dream the other night as I was tracing my steps and remembered that I don't think this problem started until I swapped out my dash cluster bulbs. Yes, that may be the lead I was looking for, could I have jostled something and in turn caused this issues?

XC, I do remember reading a thread about cluster bulb install causing odd ball problems. Sounds worth checking out your dream!

Absolutely. Given your symptomm set (no CEL, no P0500) more likely than anything else. Those dash cluster connectors are funky.

Crap, no dice on that fix either. Everything was connected perfectly. I checked connections, pins, contact points, everything. Then i had to fight those damn dash screws....you know 4 are dull and 4 are sharp. Dull are for the cluster, sharp are for the trim bezel. Here I go to tear it down again because I forgot the order. I had part of the wiring harness damaged a few years ago from the installation of the headers. I'll have to check for exposure there.

Is it possible my speedo is just whacked out?......I feel like the VSC light is telling me something I just cannot hear it.

:Update:

So I just kept driving. The annoyance of the VSC light had faded, but was still present with a sometime functional speedometer/ odometer. Then a funny thing happened. The ABS light came on, stayed on, and would only go out momentarily to return on again. This reminded me of a short of some kind. The next day the speedometer worked and the ABS light was off. I thought huh, reached under the seat and flicked the selector for the SuperLift True Speed Calibrator, and the speedo died. Switched it back and the speedo was alive (the Super lift TSC has two positions for running 2 tire sizes). It was then I knew the unit was at fault for my issues and not the ABS VSC ECU. I pulled the trim out, and the carpet back to find a loose power wire to the TSC and a shaved ground wire from wire to body panel rub. Quick google search showed that these TSC last 7-10 years. As luck would have it mine was 10 years old. I fixed the power wire and the ground in hopes that was all the issue was but it was still faulty. I took the TSC out of the loop and all is good again. Mind you my speedo and odo are off 10-14%. 35" tires with 4.88 gears will do that.
