Spider gears are donezo

Does anyone know how I managed to do this? Also, how do you to remove the carrier from the diff? I opened the clamshell case, but the carrier seems to be stuck on the ADD shaft. I'm going to go get some star sockets to take all the ADD components off tomorrow to see it that does it.

Everything's better with pics:

Man I did the same thing to my front diff. I equated it to over heating and severe abuse at the same time. I was out at a local spot and I high centered badly. An hour later I got it out and was climbing a moderately steep hill and the front end started bucking at me bad and when I came down it went crunch. I ended up getting my spiders out of a 93' 2nd Gen. Just keep pulling on the carrier its in there pretty good. Heres the ALLDATA for it. You have to pull out #7 and the carrier will follow.

I also got you an exploded of the exterior. Gives you a good idea of how the ADD is setup

These two and two that I know of makes 4 that have done this.
I was going to say that it was a Colorado thing till PoRunner posted.
All 4 rigs are running 285s.

What is the aprox miles on the rig?
The other two are 220,000-250,000.
I'm sitting at 214k and may be headed toward the same.

My rig only has 150k on it and the previous owner towed it behind his RV everywhere it went. Oh and I was running the stock 265's when she came apart on me. It was a HOT night in the NM desert and I was mad due to my neglegence offroad and getting stuck so I was beating it bad after that. Then it blew. Sorry Toyota :(

PoRunner: Thanks for the all-data sheet. I'll try and yank it out. I just didn't want to damage anything because I'm not sure how the ADD system is coupled to the carrier.

And I guess I just beat on the 4runner too hard, it makes me not want to put spiders back in but I guess they've lasted this long. That is nice the the older IFS front differentials share the same spiders.

Gerdo: The odometer is at 193603. And I'm running the 285/75/16's as well.

Now I'm trying to figure the best course of action. The ring and pinion aren't broken in any way, but there are some small metal chunks fused to the ring gear. I'm thinking about taking this opportunity to re-gear because I have a front diff from a tacoma w/ 4.88's in it a friend gave me. The only problem with the diff is that it has some kind of auto locker in it and I don't want that on a DD. My friend gave me the rear 3rd member too, but the pinion was broken. It did have the same type of locker in it as the front though. Let me get some pictures of these lockers to see if anyone can ID them

Scotty - someone gave you the front / rear 4.88 for free? that's awesome. Let me know if you don't want them because I would love to have them.

Yeah, my friend was driving across the country for grad school and could only take what he could fit in his tacoma so he gave me the the diffs! I guess the previous owner of his truck had these diffs in the tacoma, but he broke the rear pinion gear so he swapped in his original set of diffs and sold the truck. I don't know much about the lockers, but what i'd like to do is take the front locker out and just put spiders in there. Then I'd only have to get a rear 4.88 r&p and install kit.

Here's the lockers. Anyone know what brand they are?

Its a lockirght or aussie locker. All the designs are the same. I would run it :) hey no more spider gears to blow up.

To get that carrier off you take those star nuts off the add tube. Remove it. Then pop the add stub shaft out of the carrier. Its held in just like your cv joints. So pry it out with a couple screwdrivers.

Cool, I got it out. I gave it a good tap from the ADD tube side using a screw driver and hammer. The pin in the locker was in the way but I was able to get the screw driver on the edge of the ADD shaft. The prying from the carrier side wasn't working very well.

Anyway, I'm still on the fence about keeping a locker in the front. True, there's no more spider gears to blow up, but i'm going to guess the cv shafts are going to take a little more abuse with the locker in. On the flip side of that though, I'll be able to go up obstacles slower and with better control, which may in turn reduce the shock loads that usually lead to breakage when I try and hop up obstacles.

I wouldn't even consider the locker in the front if it was winter time because snow comes out of nowhere in Colorado and I don't think auto lockers are the best idea in the snow. But since the snow seems to be done, it's definitely a possibility. Decisions.....

That's not an Aussie for a front 3rd gen 4runner. The picture of front 3rd gen 4runner Aussie Locker is here: Aussie Locker XD-27527 I.F.S. 7.5" r.g. Front Differential - Aussie Lockers - Welcome to Torq Masters Home of the Aussie Locker.

You're right on not wanting an automatic locker in the front. I'm still getting used to driving mine in the rear now and I wouldn't want it in the front if I had snow to deal with while driving. Hard to explain with words but I wouldn't do it. I'm looking to save for a ARB down the road.
