Spindles: 2wd vs. 4wd

This may be a stupid question. Can I put a spindle from the 2wd onto mine that's 4wd?

I think this is possible since it looks like the 2wd version only has a couple caps covering the through hole for the cv shaft. I can find 2wd spindles all day, but the 4wd versions are a lot more expensive.

Hubs are definitely different, IIRC the spindles are too, but I won't know until I do my 4WD conversion :fishing:

I just verified with Toyota that the spindles are the same for the 2wd, and the 4wd. The OEM part number 43202-35071, and that part is used on both models. Hub assemblies are the same as well. OEM part number 43502-35110 are used on both models.

Yup, 2wd spindles will works on a 4wd concerning its wheel bearings. For some reason I thought the bearings were different.

Correct, the wheel bearings are different between the two.

In my experience with 2WD spindles, there are no splines once you pull those caps off

The hub is definitely different. That PN you posted is only for the 2WD 4Runner. The 2WD hub is missing the internal splines and is setup for the bearing pre-load nut on the back side instead of the axle to hold the front together. See the pic that COB posted above.

Spindles are the same, bearings are the same, outer seal is the same, snap ring is the same, abs tone ring is the same. Hub is different. 4wd has a seal on the inboard side for the axle to mesh with. I think that's about it. (This info is for ADD front end. A manual hub front end is slightly different.)

Yes. You're going to need new bearings as they will be destroyed in the process of doing the press work. Snap ring should be reusable as well as tone ring. Outer seal will need to be replaced and you'll need to install the inner seal as well since 2wd doesn't have one and you'll need one when going to 4wd.

What exactly are you doing, Mike?

If you are just looking for a replacement knuckle, just make sure you get one that has provisions for ABS. If it helps in any way, I have 2 good non-ABS 2WD knuckles you could have.

2wd/4wd uprights (knuckles) are the same - the stuff you bolt in them can be different.

(I used 2wd uprights to do my manual hub conversion for my 4wd '96, FWIW)

If you are just looking for a replacement knuckle, just make sure you get one that has provisions for ABS. If it helps in any way, I have 2 good non-ABS 2WD knuckles you could have.

I need to replace a wheel bearing, and can't be down a vehicle while I wait for the press work. The plan was to swap in a temporary spindle while the repair is being done.

If I can find someone to do press work over the weekend then I won't have to worry about it, but that's easier said than done.

I️ had the dealer press out an old wheel bearing and then put a new on in on a Saturday and it was $150 in labor as I️ suppled the bearing. That was for one not both... I️ made some time durning the week to take the other spindle to a machine shop who did it for $40.

My best friend (if that's a thing for a 40 to man to say) has a well-equipped home garage/shop (many of my tools are there) and that is where I work on my cars and trucks. His wife and I used to work for the same company and that's how we met. I would go crazy if I couldn't work on my stuff and had to outsource everything, so I get it, Mike.

You need a wrenching friend with a house, a car hobby, and an understanding wife.

I have a very understanding wife when it comes to vehicles. She comes from a drag racing family who now builds ratrods, and restores classic cars.

I'm hoping to be in a house with a large garage in a week or two as of last night. Since ALL of my tools are in storage in Missouri I get to buy new ones soon.
