Spinning Sound in Fourth Gear

HI ALL,

New to the forum.

I have been loving my 94 SR5 3.0L manual 4runner that I just bought, but it has a sound Im a little concerned about.

It sounds like something spinning, perhaps in the transfer case, when I am in fourth gear. I can also hear it in 2nd gear, but much more faint.

It does not sound like a grind or something slipping, it just sounds more like something spinning at the same rpms as the engine.

Also, I can change the sound more or less by putting a little bit of pressure on the shifter, and can feel it slightly in the stick. Perhaps, like I can hear the pressure plates?

Anyway, was searching for an answer when I stumbled on you guys, so I thought I best see if anyone else has the same experience.

It could be any number of things: input bearing, syncros, shift fork, throw out bearing, pilot etc..
Really hard to say based on a desription. If it is not all that loud then I would just keep an eye (ear or hand) on it to see if it gets any worse or if you notice any new symptoms popping up.

Thanks for the response. You gave me some good starting points to research.

It sounds just like a loud speedometer cable, but it is definitely coming from the gear box. It is not loud, but most noticeable in 2nd and 4th gear, (the 2 gears at the bottom of the shift box). If I put in the clutch or put it into neutral then the noise stops, so its something when the gears are engaged.

Good advice to keep an eye/hand on it. I have been driving it for a month now and never turn on the radio, and wont, until I know ever noise and rattle my new baby makes. I just want to understand what is going on down there.
