Sport Edition Brakes

Has anyone seen a test of the SE brakes vs. the SR5 brakes. is there a real difference>>?

aside from the cosmetics (hood scoop) what are the other pivotal differences between the SE and SR5?

Telescoping steering wheel. In the early 2003 models, the SR5 steering wheel tilted and telescoped, but telescoping was later removed in the SR5. SE and Limited both have it.

SE has unique 17" wheels. 2003-2005 SR5s could be optioned to have the same 17" rims as Limiteds. 2006+ Limiteds can get 18" rims

Colormatched and heated sideview mirrors on SE, SR5 is black and not heated.

SE has XREAS standard. SR5 without, option on Limiteds

SE gets a different color interior. Not really "pivotal" but...

2006+ SE get the tube style steps and luggage rack

Those are the stuff that come to mind right now...

Its hard to make a driect comparison, because the SR5 is shod with different tires.

From the infamous car and driver hood scoop aritcle...

In acceleration the Toyota was second best at 15.7 seconds and 88 mph in the quarter. Braking was best of the bunch at 170 feet from 70 mph. Both on- and off-road, however, the brakes felt overboosted, particularly at low speeds.

170 feet is a GREAT number, rivaling many cars.


I have not seen a full out test of an SR5.

thanks. The infamous review where the rollers at C $ D cared more about seat position and comfort than any real capabilities.....known as the drunk man's guide to an SUV purchase.

just be happy that sports edition got bigger front brakes than sr5 and limited.

Sport Edition also has:

-leather wrapped steering wheel standard
-audio controls on steering wheel standard
-silver trim shift knob
-smoke chrome grill and headlamp bezels
-color keyed mirror housing, door handles, and rear license plate garnish
-power front seats standard (but also standard on sr5 V8 model)
-silver painted factory calipers

As far as braking power, the bigger brakes should stop a little better and should shead heat a little better. The Sport also has different seat material.

My 05 Limited came with the bigger (Sport) brakes.

My '04 SR5 also came with the bigger brakes.

SE gives you some nice extras (hood scoop, tubular steps, tubular roof rack, telescoping wheel, heated/color matched side mirrors, SE wheels, and of course XREAS, but you are also stuck with one interior color (which is good if you like that color). None of these can be had as orderable option on the SR5.

I LOVE the brakes on my Sport. One of the first things I noticed when test driving.

I took a ride out by the sac airport today. clear country roads and pressed down pretty hard from 50 mph and 40 mph. a little body shift from 50. ABS did not come on dry road....these brakes easily have power to spare. seems like they have brake assist as well. clearly big time brakes.....good news for the road ahead.

I think that's the one thing that scares me about the brakes. I have yet to travel to snow country to play in the snow with my new Toy, but I have this fear that I'm going to step on the brakes (like I normally do) and set off the ABS while driving on packed snow or worse - ice. I have over 10 years driving in all type of conditons in the winter, but this still scares me. Guess I got to get out there and play in an ice/snow covered parking lot to test out the bells and whistles in this new ride.

Something that I don't like about the braking is that if you're braking semi-hard on dry pavement and go over a rut or pothole, the ABS will kick in. I would think it would be smarter than that and just regain traction a split second later. The ABS stayed active until I released the brakes and reapplied them. Is that normal?

well my opinion is this. run in 4 hi and ease into the brakes to find the spot they start kicking with the ABS. you may also be able to run in 3rd and thereby reduce your forward thrust a bit....this is what I plan to do.....perhaps owners with more years in the 4Runner will know more....
