Sport Edition Hood scoop leaking?

HI guys

My new-to-me 08 4Runner Sport V8 is sittin out front, and its raining cats n dogs here. There were 4 maching screws with locknuts the factory uses to keep the scoop assembly together, and one is rusted pretty good. I went outside and opened the hood while it was raining, and saw water dripping from said screw and from the others as well.

You think theres a gasket gone bad there?

If so, is it covered under that warrantee you get when you buy a certified used toyota?

Im not even certain it supposed to be perfectly sealed. Certified warranty wont cover it. Regular warranty might if its under 3/36.

Well, i just spoke to the Service Dept at my local dealership. Here's what he told me.

Its covered under the 12mo/12,000 certified comprehensive warranty

Its also covered under the Platinum Warranty I purchased* when i bought the used truck at a Toyota Dealership.

One of the 4 "screws" that are visible on the under-side of the hood (that holds the scoop assembly on) is rusted and its mainly dripping from there.

I bring it in tomorrow for them to diagnose and order the parts.

hey zero- I don't have a Sport hood currently and have never really looked at the up close - tell me-

Is the scoop open for air to flow thru ?

Although the scoop is fake and is for looks only, don't expect it to be 100% water tight. Mine will "leak" water into the engine compartment when I wash & rinse the hood and it's done that since the day it was new.

Nope, it's blocked off. Cosmetic only...not functional at all. I heard there are some turbo diesel 4Runners in Europe that have the scoop functional, but I'm not sure if that's true or not.

They'll replace the rusted screw(s) but don't expect to stop it from leaking. It was never meant to be water-tight. Mine leaks also. Whenever I wash the truck I know I'll be wiping down the engine bay with more water in there than I'm accustomed to.

Yeah, mine's always leaked. I actually thought about gutting the plastic that blocks it off if I ever got an intake, but since it's my winter and DD vehicle, it doesn't make much sense to let all that water spill into my engine bay even more than it does now

Yeah, you guys are right.

They replaced the screw, but they werent sure if the hood scoop was supposed to be water-tight.

They brought up the assembly on the "parts dept" computer, and we saw there was no kind of gasket. The parts people did call Toyota to get the skinny on the scoop, so they were learning just as I was.

Long story short, the scoops have never been water-tight. I wasnt keen on this, so you can imagine my reaction when i went out into the pouring rain and lifted the hood.

Anyways, thanks for the info you guys. Guess we all learned something today.
