Sport Edition Rack - Wind Noise

I just installed an OEM sport edition rack off an 06 on my 4Runner and am getting extra wind noise. I know the SR5/Limited racks had a sticker that showed you where to position the cross bars to minimize wind noise, but I don't see any indicators on the sport edition (tubular style) rack that indicate proper positioning of the cross bars. Can anyone tell me where the cross bars should be to minimize the wind noise on the tube-style sport edition roof racks? Thanks.

Don't know if this helps, when I was driving back my SE (from the previous owner) I had significant wind noise and rattles. I tightened the crossbars and positioned them at the farthest ends. The result is no noise & rattles.

I am planning on retrofitting my old yakima fairing from a previous car on the t4r to help w/ wind noise from my oem rack with attachments installed (it's quiet without any on it, though). A quick test fit gave me a pretty good idea of how to mount my existing fairing on the oem rack, just above the moonroof.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try and place at the farthest ends and see what that does. I figure there must be some recommended placement of the cross bars by Toyota.

I seem to recall that there is a front /back side to each of the cross rails, and one end should face forward.

However, I can't seem to find anything to back this up, so maybe I am recalling something else.

I was just looking this up as well, I see it's a year old post, any resolve with moving them?

I know that I have a SE and my cross bars stay in the factory position that is indicated on them to prevent wind noise; and I can attest that I have no wind noticeable wind noise from my bars.

Yes, my issue was fixed by reorienting the cross bars. Be careful when installing to make sure they are facing the correct direction. It's hard to tell, but they are asymmetrical and are designed such that there is a defined side to face the front of the vehicle. As far as positioning goes, you should see a small black dot on the inside portion of the rack at the front and back indicating the correct positioning of the cross bars. The black dots at least for mine were only on one side. Hope this helps.

x2 I have to tiny holes on the inner rails and when i put the bars in the center of those holes. perfect! no windnoise. yes they are designed with bernoulli in mind. so orientation def. does matter.

I recalled seeing the dots when installing and went out and moved them to those spots on a hunch, glad it was the right move, didn't test it yet, I also wasn't sure which way the crossmembers faced so again, took a shot and put the loops facing each other on the inside, right or wrong it's staying for a bit.

I have a lot of wind noise coming from somewhere but I suspect it's from those big side mirrors since the ones on my sport bike make a lot of noise too. How do you tell if there is noise from the roof rack anyway, get someone to ride up there and listen for it like Mitt Romney's dog?
