The VIN should tell you that it's a Highlander. To some/most of the people on this forum, the msot "coveted" 3rd generation is arguably the 1999 4Runner with the Highlander package, 4WD, a 5-speed (not my cup of tea), '99-specific "tall" springs, and the rear locking differential. I think you'll be able to tell the difference between a slushbox and a manual, but to tell if you have the rear locker, check the dash cutout between the gauge dimmer and the steering column. If you've got a button with "RR DIFF LOCK" in orange on it, you'll have a step up on the offroading scene.
