Sport vs. Limited suspension

I have a 2005 Sport Edition 4runner with Nitto Terra Grapplers and the ride is incredibly rough a makes horrible sounds. My brother just picked up a 2006 Limited 4runner with the stock tires and it makes no noise and is very smooth. What's the difference?

The Sport has XREAS standard, whereas it's optional on the Limited. The XREAS is more comfortable than the standard suspension, so I don't see that being a reason. It is possible that the XREAS has failed, it is quite common unfortunately. If you look at the shocks, you will see a line (hydraulic) connected to them. Check the shocks to see if they are damp, it's possible they are leaking and causing the rough ride. My second thought is maybe it's the tires. What size and load range? Tires with a heavy load range ride worse (generally). So, if he has the sandard P rated tires and you have LT's or something heavier duty, that's also a possible reason. Then again, it could be a combination. How many miles on your sport?

I wouldn't say XREAS is more comfortable, but it is stiffer and more responsive than the stock suspension. It is more likely that you have XREAS and his has the standard suspension. Nitto's are also much more agressive than the stock tires, so more noise and a more harsh ride will result from these tires, but you will have much better traction.

I have 110 000kms. It has 265/70/17's, and I just had my truck in for front sway bar bushings and had the mechanics inspect the truck underneith and said everything was fine, including XREAS and all the shocks. The harsh ride is starting to rattle the interior to bits too...now I'm jealous of my brother LOL.

If your Xreas is not busted, the tires will be the problem. Sounds like your tires are prolly 6 ply and for sure more aggressive. Stock tires are prolly 4 ply and less aggressive. I would bet $$ that's the difference. Again, unless you xreas is busted. Let us know what you find.

i would be curious if someone may have accidently disconnected one of your shocks and drained some of the fluid. that would ruin the xreas system. does it feel like it hits and bottoms out all the time, or is it mainly just rough?

Its mainly just really rough. I only have the P rated Terra Grapplers as well. I did research before deciding on those tires and didn't read anything about them having a really rough ride. Does anybody reading this thread have the Nittos? Can you chime in with your experience?

I have it booked in next week to get it looked at either way.

I know its a lot of work but why don't you switch your rims/tires with your brother for the weekend and see if that makes a difference.
