Sport vs SR5

How different is the ride in a Sport edition with XREAS than the SR5? I'm assuming the Sport handles better but I also don't want too firm a ride.

I would test drive the two for myself since perception of what is a "good" ride is subjective. For example there are some threads in the forum that indicate the seats are uncomfortable in the 4 runner for some while others think they are comfortable. its a preference dictated by the individual. I do enjoy hearing everyones opinion because I have learned a lot in my short time of being a member.

If you test drive both, you will find that the Sport is well worth considering for the XREAS system alone. If you plan on moding the suspension for serious off-roading (beyond a basic 3" spacer lift) you may NOT want the XREAS, since you would probably have to remove the shocks. I find the XREAS making the 4Runner allot more stable at highway speeds.

You have to weigh in the options you want versus what you need. SE gives you some extras not available on most SR5's... Heated Side mirrors, telescoping wheel, larger front brakes (slightly), and most importantly XREAS. XREAS is something you may or may not feel due to your driving style (more agressive and you will feel XREAS doing it's job, less agressive and you may not even notice it except that the ride is a little stiffer). Aside from that, the SE's have a tubular roof rack these days and that hood scoop (love it or hate it, the SE's have it).

Like Koz mentioned, if you plan to do any modifications, XREAS is probably not your first choice as it adds an extra complication to the suspension. Also remember if the system fails outside of warranty it is over $1k to replace (although only a handful of people have had XREAS system failures).

Hey i was just wondering, what years have the XREAS? I went to a toyota dealership and they didn't even know what i was talking about. Haha they were telling me something about "struts". If anyone could answer my question id greatly appreciate it!

xreas vs sr5

so I drove both XREAS and SR5. clearly stiffer on the sport and "comfy" on the SR5. trying to figure which is better for me. the shocky stiffness (15 miles on the sport) I think will taper off and the design is superior to the SR in my opinion. Any long term sport owners advice apreciated!

I've had my SE for 3 years and about 33k miles and I really like the handling on it. Its been a few years since I've test driven an SR5, but I drove an SE right afterwards and I knew the SE was for me. Of course this is my first SUV after only driven cars so I wanted something that doesn't "feel" like an SUV. I'm not saying the handling on NON-XREAS equipped 4Runners suck, it's just the XREAS makes it even better.

There are reports of SE owners with 90K miles on their XREAS so it should last a long while. On the other hand, some owners have reported it failing after 30K miles. Like all things, some are built better than others...

If I had it to do all over again, I'd definitely get a XREAS equipped 4Runner. I'm not looking to do any major lifts so that isn't an issue for me. Plus the SE gives you a lot of extras over the SR5 so it was a no brainer for me. I also don't like leather seats and those were standard on Limited models. When it comes down to it, it's all preference.
