Sprayed Paint - Bubbled on Center Hub. . Why??

Had a weird thing happen when I painted my hubs caps. (I had to replace one with an aftermarket - trying to match the color among the four)

I sprayed them with primer 2x with this:



They dried nice and smooth for a few days with just the primer - So i do not think this is a primer issue. I then sprayed them with the silver paint (below) - planned a clear coat after:



THEN THIS HAPPENED almost immediately upon spraying the silver on the dry primer surface!




Crazy to watch it happen. The silver is not a textured paint. The smooth parts of the hub are exactly what I was going for.

I've never seen paint do that. Anyone know what happened here? I'm not sure - can't find anything obvious after reading labels.

Did you clean it with any kind of chemical?

Was the paint high temp? If not that may be the culprit. The rims get very hot during breaking & driving down the road, and a good bit of that heat is transferred to the tires and caps.

The solvent in the spray paint is super strong and caused the original paint to lift off of the center caps. If u peel the paint off at the wrinkles ur prob gonna see the plastic the caps are made of.

I actually noticed the primer in the first pic. The silver paint could also caused the primer to lift off of the original finish. Either one or both things are possible.

Yep, too thick of a coat tends to cause this when the solvent reacts with the underlying layer. Lighter coats are what you need.

I reprinted my center caps a while back (over a year now I think) with these things and they're holding up fine. I just found them and realized I didn't use high temp paint and all of my center caps look the same. I guess you'll need to strip the paint and re do it.

Ja, new topcoat is not compatible with the original paint or there's some kind of contaminant....

Well, i have no intention of using High-temp paint. The hub caps above look like they held up fine with normal paint. I'll take my chances.

I've never heard of the reaction issue, but I guess it makes sense that the coat was too thick and there was a reaction.

Two of the four turned out fine, and I'm letting the clear coat dry as we speak. The other two are terrible and will be re-worked. Will be my weekend project!
