Spring Spacers vs. Coilovers

I'm looking to lift my '99 4runner 3 inches pretty soon and am not sure which route to go. Spring spacer kits seem to be a lot cheaper than coilover kits but I don't know if that's because they're a lot worse than coil overs. Any thoughts?

If you want to go 3" you should look at these.

Front Bilstein Height adjustable 5100 shocks - Toytec Lifts: Toyota Lift Kits: FJ Cruiser Lift Kits, Tacoma Lift Kits, Tundra Lift Kits, 4 Runner Lift Kits, Sequoia Lift Kits, Toyota Truck Lift Kits

They give you up to 2.5" of lift, just have to have the coils swapped over, so for a few $$ more than spacers you get the 5100s.

Just a thought. I am new to the realm of coilovers front suspensions myself and other than the additional adjustability, I would say you are going to get better ride quality. I will be interested to see what comments you get on this myself.

Spacers are cheap for a reason, but I think they do have their place. What do you plan on doing with your rig once it's lifted?

Spacers are cheaper because they don't do much. Coilovers are an active part of the suspension. They're the way to go.

I do a little bit of everything whether it's sand in Pismo or rockcrawling in the mountains. I'm not doing any super tough trails right now but I'd like to keep the option open. The main reason I'm lifting it is because the new tires I got rub when the suspension completely flexes one way or the other.

You sound like I did 3 years ago when I got my truck. If you actually are going to wheel the truck don't get spacers. I would say coilovers because of the adjustability if you add weight. Were as if you go OME you need to get new springs and take everything apart.

Looks like a Tahoe trip is in the works over on 120 keep an eye out and join us if you can.

Like all the ol timers will tell from their personal experience do it right the 1st time !! If you're spending YOUR $$ make sure & don't waste time & $$ , unless you do the labor .
