Springs, weight, and I have no idea...

My CBI rear bumper with swing out should be shipping in the next week. Even after going over a million threads I am still not 100% sure of which way to go.

Is it possible to just upgrade the rear springs without doing the shocks right away?

Eventually they will be upgraded, just if I can push it off a bit longer, the better.

Thanks for any help you guys can give!

Edited to add; this is being built to be an awesome mall crawler for now, so suspension wont be needed until next year when I have free time again to go play!

It would depend on lift heigh, but yes you should be able to use your factory shocks. If you're lifting, they may bottom out a bit sooner than normal limiting your down travel but that's the biggest issue I can foresee. They make shock extensions for Jeep's that may work, they're like $30 and could return your shocks to a more neutral travel position, depending on how much rear lift height you're looking at. I don't think it's commonly done on Toyota's, or at least I don't see it mentioned much.

Edit: To clarify, bottom out in over-extension not compression.

Get an airbag kit installed. It'll will help support the extra weight and you won't have to mess with needing longer shocks to go with the heavier springs (which are normally taller). And I believe airbag kits are cheaper than springs.

Thank you all! Reading about airbags now. I do want to keep stock height, not looking at bigger tires or anything else.

airbags are good cheap option for when you have additional weight hauling a load or something, but for a daily load like a rear bumper get heavier springs

Airbags are all you need. They are cheap and work great. Other than new tires (BFG TA KO2 in stock size) my 4Runner is stock. For the last two years I have been towing an Xventure trailer on a regular basis off road. The airbags have performed flawlessly when towing and handling the tongue weight.
