squeaking/scraping noise while accelerating

2000 SR5 V6 4WD Automatic 116K miles

What it does:
Any gear, any speed. light acceleration it will make a metal rubbing on metal sound. As soon as I let off the gas it stops. Does not make this sound in neutral revving the motor.

What I have tried already:
I searched around and someone said the cat may have broken apart. Since I had a CEL for the rear cat anyway I took it to a muffler shop and got it replaced. (actually deleted the front one and just running a single cat now)

Noise continues... More searching someone said grease the driveshaft. I had no idea that was even a thing. Straight to the store and got a grease gun. Pumped a whole tube into the thing through the various grease points.

Noise continues... Another suggestion I found was heat shields rusted. Checked all those and they are fine.

So now what? I fear this may be transmission problems (last service was 6k miles done by PO at the dealership)

I had a similar sound that I couldn't nail down where it was coming from. I ran it through an automatic car wash and the sound disappeared (I didn't intend to fix the problem by washing the truck, just happened). I guess I got lucky. In my case, it must have been some dirt or rocks scraping. I still don't understand on why it was only during acceleration and not when coasting or revving the engine. Good luck figuring it out!
 
i have a similar sound actually i am trying to figure out...sounds like a metal scraping or rubbing sound almost, only on accel at around 10mph..sounds like it is coming from the pass side...no clue what it is and it only started after i got new wheels and tires on...theres no rubbing whatsoever so i was thinking maybe something with the brakes (dust shield) or something or maybe something in the suspension since the tires are about 2 inches taller and make the rig sit higher...maybe it is a bearing or needs grease but I will def. let you know if i find out what the heck it is
 
so I tried to get a video... unless I can find a road that is smooth as glass.. the sound of the cheap plastic inside the truck falling apart is over powering the sound I need you to hear. I even tried holding the gopro outside the truck and its too windy to pick up any sound... I am guessing I will just keep driving until whatever it is breaks and then I will know what to fix.
 
I have the same noise. Almost sounds like a hollow metal scraping sound. It only happens when I'm in gear rolling, if I throw it in neutral it stops, even if I rev the engine. As I slow down, the noise does as well, and stops while I'm idling.

And it doesn't happen every time I drive either. Frustrating....

It doesn't do anything other than make noise. I still shift/accelerate/brake/drive etc normal... So its impossible to point fingers. I am just going to let it ride then. Keep the volume turned up.
 
I'm glad I'm not the only one with a similar noise. One major difference is that I've got a manual transmission. I haven't been able to pin point my issue but I was thinking it was the transmission or maybe the clutch. Now I'm thinking it's something else.

For the most part mine occurs around 2,000 RPM (+/- 500 RPM, in gear and either under a load or downshifting. Everything is fine at idle, revving and other RPMS. I've lubed the shafts, checked heat shields, removed skid plates, etc.

Well hearing this eliminates another theory that I was told... Since you don't have a torque converter we move on to the more expensive parts...
 
One item that was brought up to me was timing belt tensioners. I can't replicate the noise while the 4Runner is stationary so it's still there. It's not all the time so it's hard to track down. Since everything still works it's not at the top of my list.
 
Ya other than the noise, nothing is different drive wise. I've changed the drive shaft bearings, so it's not that. I crawled under while it was off and banged around, can't get anything to make a noise.
I need to find a way to safely get all 4 wheels off the ground and put it in gear...and be under it to try and pinpoint. But there isn't a safe way to do that.

where theres a will theres a way!

there are lifts that will lift the car wheels off of the lift itself.
 
When was the last time you greased your u joints and drive shaft? I did it and took the squeak away. Mine sounded like it was from inside the rear driveshaft.
 
Drive shafts are cleaned and lubed on an annual basis. The moise was present for a while last year then kind of went away. When it started up again I lubed the shafts while I was under there trying to figure out what was going on. The lubing didn't solve the problem but about a month later the noise silenced itself for the time being.

My truck has had this noise for the last 40,000 miles. It makes it at 2000, 3000, 4000 RPMs. I changed the timing belt and tensioner last month, so that's not it. I'm guessing it's on the exhaust. Mine is worse when it's cold outside.
 
Interesting. At those RPM's does the noise occur under load, just cruising along or coasting?

I never considered temperature but it doesn't get really cold here. Even still it's been quiet this winter and last made the noise during warmer months. Usually under load or while coasting, not just driving along.
 
I don't know if I have figured it out or not but...

The noise has gotten increasingly louder... when I put it in 4wd now it makes the noise until it comes to a complete stop instead of just under acceleration.

Which led me to think axle or transmission. Went down there and looked around and I saw a tiny amount of grease on the frame. Which I was not concerned about.. but then I saw a giant rip in the axle... So I am guessing with all of the snow driving and road scum build up whatever grease was slinging out was getting washed away and I never noticed it. So I guess I will replace the axle and see what happens.

I do have one question though... Can I just remove the axle and replace it another time? I don't see anything wrong with that other than if it would mess up transmission internals.?? I am asking because I have called around and cant find one in stock and I want to pull the axle out tomorrow before it actually breaks and causes a real problem at 60 mph.

After searching around for symptoms of a bad cv I found this thread http://www.ttora.com/forum/showthread.php?t=166699 which is exactly whats going on... I started having the abs light come on too when I would accelerate really hard.. but I googled that and someone said the sensor was reading low... I don't know why I went with that but I did.. However the light has gotten more prominent as the noise has gotten worse.

Ya, I'm pretty sure my noise is the CVs. They've been shooting some grease for a while now. I ordered replacements from Advance, Lifetime warranties with no core charge. I'll fix my OEMs and replace them, keep the Advance ones for backups.
