Are you sure you want a 2WD. I had a 2WD xterra before my 4runner and regretted it everyday. I am averaging 20mpg and getting 23mpg on the hwy so I have a hard time believing the 2WD would be much better and besides Toyota 4WDs are legendarily capable and reliable.

Also, keep in mind the difference in MSRP will be made up on resale or trade in.

buy a trail edition...it's two wheel drive until you need to move it to 4wd...in fact, aren't SR5s the same?

The SR5 has the same transfer case and engages the same way. Like you said it is 2wd until you engage the 4wd.
