SR5 premium vs limited

Scottd9000, thanks for the insights. Would you please PM me your dealership and salesman info to me? It seems you get your 4runner below invoice, which is probably the best in our region.

I had this same dilemma a few months ago, ended up with an SR5 premium w/3rd row. Paid $40,300 OTD (including TTL) in Las Vegas, NV. The questions you asked were previously answered, but the features that I wish I had from the LTD are fulltime 4WD (coming from 80 series and 100 series Land Cruisers) and seat position presets. It's annoying when someone else drives my 4R and mess up my seat position!

I just bought a 2014 Limited after driving a 2010 SR5 Premium for the last two years. The 2010 had the backup camera in the mirror. I believe, as others have stated, the newer ones use the Entune screen. The fake leather had me totally fooled. I didn't realize until this thread that my old one wasn't real leather. In fact, the SR5 Premium seats are easier to clean because the Limited seats are perforated for ventilation.

What makes the Limited a worthwhile upgrade, to me, is the smart key. I also prefer the full time AWD vs. having to shift into 4WD in poor weather driving conditions.

Also, if you're married, dual-zone climate controls are very conducive to a happy marriage.

I bought my 2014 Trail Premium w/ KDSS out the door, for $41,800.

I added GAP insurance, remote start, block heater, and roof rack cross bars as options, which were included in that price.

In my state, we have a 5% tax rate, which was also included.

Mine was a dealer swap. So to get the price I got, shocked me a bit.

The dealer was Lake Toyota in Devils Lake, ND.
There was another dealer closer in Minot, ND that wouldn't get within 2k of the price I paid for it, so I feel pretty fortunate. Greedy pigs down there wouldn't even budge. Their loss.

Limited = 20" wheels, no? That made a difference to me.

My recent SR5 Premium from Kalispell with a couple hundred in options was $39,350 OTD. I thought it was fair.

So the wheels can simply get swapped out... they're an easy sell or easy trade. :thumb:

It's funny how the guys with the LE's want the 17" wheels and the guys with the 17" wheels want the 20" wheels... and yes, I'm one of them. I have 17" Trail wheels waiting to go on mine soon. :biggrin2:

Shawk00 - true the wheels can be swapped. I didn't have the money for a Limited anyway, but I was glad the SR5 didn't come with 20's.

BTW, Caught a mistake in my post - the OTD cost was 35,350, not 39,350.
39+ would not be a fair price (duh me).

Sr5 vs limited

I should start by saying that if you are looking for a “Pajama party Barbie 4runner" you my friend, should keep looking. If you are looking for a short description of the Sr5 beast, I can offer you two words “MEAT & POTATOES”. This is the World Class chariot of the free world.

You are not dealing with any ordinary, cookie cutter 4runner son. This thing was forged from a single block of Tungsten Steel. Real sturdy! From that day forward my life has never been the same. Winch yourself off that couch and see if you can handle a 4runner.

So if you are looking for a rice burning hatch back, a solar powered liberal mobile, or even a Hyundai crossover keep on looking my friend this thing is a solid Machine.

This baby’s pulse is pumping 4.0 liters of uncensored raw fuel through her V six nuclear power plant. And rest assured this is no metro feminine automatic. . .you command her to obey, with your calloused hand planted firmly on the shifter. And she will obey, the first time, every time. If you can’t handle a shifter, or reach the brake pedal, you better not ferry skip over here wanting to look at her. If you stall her out, you can count on getting hit in the face with a piece of re-bar and sent back where you came from.

It has A/C but are you kidding me….Really! If you want to blow the sweat off your brow, you do it the old fashioned way: windows down. “What if it rains?”. . .You whiney *****! I told you to stop reading. . . Any man who drives this beast doesn’t give a damn about rain. Not even skin melting acid rain, Cause he’s already dripping wet in blood, sweat, dip spit, and fish guts.

If you are looking for the kind of 4runner that has to be pansy parked in the garage, so the “carpet doesn’t get wet and soggy” Then you should plant your Obama sticker on some Other piece of shite. Cause this thing has drain holes in the floor and rhino lined to let the blood drain out from the buffalo you just killed, with your bare hands. Because you are William Wallace from Braveheart and when you get home you can leave your “sissy sponge glove car wash kit” in the pink bucket it came in. Go ahead and spark up your 6000 psi heated pressure washer on the dually trailer in your man cave, cause you are Tim Gillespie and you can pressure wash your truck on the inside. She’s got rhino lined floors with a full roll cage in case that buffalo comes back to life while you’re doing 80 over some mountain pass or flooded river.

If you’re thinking about Mexican chrome bumpers for her, think again. The bumper bashers come hand forged in a blacksmith shop in Franklin County over a wood burnin fire, out of 4 inch well casing, and railroad tracks and then I welded em to the damn chassis. That way if you get deployed you can piggy back this war wagon on a deuce and a half and chain her down tight from the four corners, so you don’t lose her when your convoy gets hit by a taliband roadside suicide bomber.

And forget about putting one of those “It’s a 4runner Thing. . .You wouldn’t understand” stickers on this machine cause when you’re spotted in this Classic there will be no questions, no further explanation required, people will understand and get out of your way. . …real quick.

If you think you’re ready to park one of these panty haulers on your tract of land. If you buy a 4runner you better go get your old lady ready for some damn changes around your lair, cause this shite will be happening. What will be Happening? Glad you asked….

Why would you want 17" wheels vs 20"?

Better ride quality on and off road. More traction off road. Personal preference really but it just depends on what you want to do with it - do you want to look awesome cruising up the road, or kick ass on the trail and enjoy better ride on the roads to boot.

just got 2015 premium 17 tires more side wall better flex better ride. Part time 4wd less wear on drive line & front tires. Pleatherett seats clean easier and are HEATED. Love this truck.

That just about sums it up! :thanks:

yes limiteds are essentially all wheel drive with a center differential that allows you to be in 4wd mode on dry pavement ( a no no for part time 4wd like the sr5) and then you can select low or high 4wd drive just like the sr5

being essentially AWD it reduces how much you have to manage the state your drivetrain is in, if the weather turns or you go from dry pavement to icy pavement you don't have to do anything. with part time 4wd you have to manage it a bit more. if theings get really ugly then you can shift to high or low locked 4wd just like you can in the sr5

can you elaborate on managing it more? I am having this dilemma currently shopping between a premium vs limited. Let's say my wife drives and one part of the road is slick/snow/rain etc. and she turns onto another road that is plowed and drier, what type of management is involved. Is the part time 4wd just spinning its wheels on the plowed and dryer conditions and not going anywhere?

Furthermore, you said it's essentially awd for limited. Isn't 4wd and awd very different? Does the 4runner have 4wd and awd, or is that something it's one or the other generally?

The article linked below offers a great explanation and hopefully answers your question. It was originally posted by 1engineer in the "New and Perspective Buyers" sticky (a thread at the top of the 5th gen forum). It is full of great information and advice. The SR5 models are a part time 4wd system as described by this article, while the Limited is the full time 4wd with the ability to lock the center differential as described in the article (essentially making it like the part time 4wd system when engaged, i.e. putting it in 4hi and 4low).

This seems to be the most recent thread comparing Limited vs SR5 Premium. I'm doing this same comparison but on 2022 models, would love to get more recent feedback -- either on the specs comparison or more tactical / subjective usage and feel. Thanks!
