SS 1.2 Tokico vs, Bilstein Rear

I searched for about a half hour or 45 minutes and can't find a thread that addresses this question specifically, other than one post that says the Tokicos are fine, but I would like a little wider range of opinions.

I am going to order the SS 1.2 today and would like advice on whether or not to upgrade from the Tokico rears to the Bilsteins. I am looking for the best combination of maximum lift and longevity.

Contact SS. He will give you all the info you need. Tokicos are oem so they will last. They do better with weight and are more stiff than the Billy's. Billy's give a bit softer ride.

You might also consider holding out a month, as Bilstein is supposedly releasing their new, 4runner-specific 5160 rear shocks.

Did anyone post the compressed and extended numbers on these? Just hoping they can handle bigger springs without running 4th gen or FJ shocks.

I have the SS 1.2 and went with the Tokico. I believe they are LC shocks which are longer and beefier to compensate for the taller coils, which BTW are LC 80 series front coils. I like the ride quality with the Tokicos, not too stiff and and not too soft. They also come with "rock guards" attached to the bottom of the shocks as added protection which is a pretty cool feature.

I bought the SS 1.2 kit in '09 with the Billies. Replaced with the Tokikos fairly recently. Happier.
To be fair, the Bilsteins were completely worn out so it's comparable memory of what they used to be. I've also added a rear bumper w/swingout so that's more disparity between new Billies vs new Tokikos.
I like the ride better on the new shocks, and not soooo soft like the Billies. The Tokikos required some modification to the upper mount, no biggie. The rear Billies started leaking relatively quickly, that was pretty disappointing too.

The front Bilsteins hadn't been an issue and lasted a reasonable amount of time. I replaced them (worn) with new Billies this past year.

Like Habanero said, with the Tokicos you have to widen the top shock mount. With a Unibit, some cutting fluid / oil, and good drill it should be easy.

You dont have to modify them. They fit fine with the correct hardware. To get 100% full movement its recommended to modify them. I have not modified mine and they are doing fine, dont hold back flex and so far not bent.

Billy's are SOFTER?!
That's hard for me to believe.
They're pretty stiff on my rear- I can't imagine an OEM shock being on the stiffer side. I know the OEM LC Takico blacks have a higher/faster rebound, but I would think they'd have a lower/faster/softer compression as well.
I can't imagine a stiffer shock than the 5100's on my rig, TBH.

I just installed OME 861 and LC tokico shocks without having to modify the top mount. I had to compress so I can get the nut on but all went smoothly. Can you explain the mod of top mount? I just want to make sure I installed correctly or prevent any breaks.

I love my Tokicos! They ride soooo smooth and soak up the bumps. I have OME 890s though.

Check out BFADs post on this matter. The centering washer has a larger diameter hole than the 4runners so you need to widen the mounting hole to accommodate it.

I have compared the valving of different shocks that I have looked at running. My conclusion for my ideal application is part 25-187724 (360/80 Valving)

These have a hair over 11" stroke and with the extended bumps/rear brake lines/Limiting straps... I've decided to run these with the OME 861.


I have also paired the front end with some new goods I just acquired....
