Stability Control Light went on while in 4 low. Flutter sound.

Every couple of months I put my 2002 Sport into four-wheel-drive and tool around the hills behind my house...Just to keep things lubed up and also to have a little fun without leaving town. I leave it in 4 high in the sand until I get to the steep hills and then I stop and put it into 4 low. Today while doing that, as I began to accelerate in 4 low, it made a fluttering, clicking sound and the stability control light went on.

I backed off on the acceleration and the light went off and the sound stopped. At this point I was really cautious because the noise did not sound good. It was not a loud clunking or anything but it definitely was not quiet. Since I didn’t want to call a friend to tow me out of there in case I got stuck, I turned around and came back home, but it did make the same sound and the stability control light did go on a couple more times as I was doing a three point turn to get off the hill.

The VSC OFF and TRAC lights were on last week but they’ve disappeared on their own the last few days. They were off today.

Any ideas?

The description is what the stability system sounds like in these vehicles. It kicked on because it detected one or more wheels turning at a different speed than the others and begins to make adjustments to braking and engine aimed at keeping the vehicle stable. Keep having fun!!! :cowboy:

It sounds like normal operation of VSC.
Could be time for zero point calibration of the system, procedure is in FSM.
Installing a lift will make VSC more sensitive, as will old sagging springs.
