Stage 3 Foam Cell Pro 3" Lift on TRD Pro

Just wanted to post a photo of my new lift. Came from the stock TRD Pro Bilstein's then to the 6112 Bilstein setup and now this. Absolutely love the setup and feel of the truck now, not to mention the look!!

They're still doing the 20% off plus free air compressor and deflator deal.

Highly recommend this, especially for anyone else with an aging 5th gen TRD Pro (mines a '15 I bought new) that's shocks are done/blown. Also, DM me if anyone wants my Bilstein 6112 setup...

Cheers--

I gotta agree with you in recommending the Ironman Foam Cell Pro shocks & coil overs. Quality stuff, built for a tank! At a nice price point.

Would you mind describing how the bilsteins felt over the stock suspension and how the Ironman setup drives? My heart wants the Foam cells, but my wallet says bilstein.

I’m also curious about the difference between OEM TRD Pro Bilstein to the 6112 Bilstein. Subscribed for the follow up.

The TRD Pro stock Bilstein 5100 setup last for about 3 years before I blew a shock. The ride was comfortable with a modest lift and performance, about as expected from an OE setup. I picked up a Bilstein 6112 setup that took the lift up another inch, to about 2.5 front/back and with adjustability up front over the 5100s. I liked the look with the additional lift but the ride quality and overall balance of the vehicle was degraded, especially around sweeping curves at highway speeds (lots of mountain and pass driving for me). I ended up pulling off the suspension after about 3 months because of the killer deal on the stage 3 Foam Cell Pro kit and having heard really good things from friends and reviews online.

What a difference! Super compliant and balanced with an impressive stance. The combination of UCAs, rear panhard bar, end links, etc really helps the truck sit right and the alignment tech commented on how dialed it was out of the box for a lifted suspension. They are built tough and fully rebuildable which gives me extra piece of mind but they are MASSIVE and military spec so I don't see needing to do that anytime soon. Highly recommended!

Looks better, drives worse IMO. Maybe because you're sitting higher and still on a relatively small shock body. Spring rate could be a factor too. The Foam Cell Pros are big, sturdy, and a bit heavier which is better suited for the 4runner. It all depends on your use and needs of course. I'm a weekend warrior at best.

So your take is FCP > OE Bilstien > 6112?

King vs Ironman vs Fox

Hi everyone! Bumping this thread while trying to figure out which suspension to upgrade to (kings vs ironman vs Fox). I'm looking for a 3in lift and getting 285/70/17 for my 2018 TRD ORP.

Budget is pretty flexible, I want quality but don't want to overdo it and pay for unnecessary parts.

I currently have a ladder and RTT. I plan on eventually getting bumpers and a winch.

Any advice is welcome, thanks in advance :)

What sort of conditions do you drive in?

I use it for a DD, although I will start riding my motorcycle when it gets a little warmer. I do the occasional weekend off-roading so I'm mainly upgrading to try and get more clearance. Camping, overlanding, off-roading, eventually towing my motorcycle. I also have KDSS.

Hmm with that in mind, I feel like the Ironmans would make the most sense. King and Foxes are great shocks but may be alittle bit more than you'd like to spend and you may not really use them to their full potential.

Ironman foam cells, Dobinson IMS, and Bilstein 6112s are good choices to look at.

Great, that's what I figured. Thanks so much :)

I guess to make sure I don't regret it later, what would the Kings and Fox be used for and why do people get them?

King, Fox, Radflos, ADS, definitely missing someone here, are all great shocks no doubt. With the 2.5 body + resis, they have a higher heat capacity so can handle corrugated terrain for longer before fading (some tests show maybe 10 minutes more). The resis allow for more shock oil in the body so the heat capacity is higher.

That being said, the front shocks on a 4runner seem hard to overheat unless you are going ham on moguls and washboard. I have never heated my shocks above 160f on long Death Valley roads (40-50mph). The rears however get less airflow and are more problematic. On the same roads, my fronts would be 160f while my rears reached 240f. I wouldn't mind having resis in the rear.

They also have the benefit of being rebuildable and re-valved. So if you add a bumper or winch and don't like the dampening, you can have it changed to. There's alot on valving like progressive/linear/digressive (see here -->Digressive vs Linear vs Progressive Pistons & Shock Valving | AccuTune Off-Road).

TLDR: you going ham offroad? The Fox/Kings/ADS etc etc could be worth it. Everything else? In my opinion, the mid-level shocks are more than enough.

Thanks so much for all your help! I think I will bite the bullet and just wait for the Kings so I don't regret it later. Especially because a few of the people I go with have the same setup. It'll make it easier to keep up, lol.
