Standard Transmission Question 5thgen

I have looked at the 5th gens and Im almost positive that standard tranny is not an option. What is your opinion of not having that option on a "rugged 4x4 suv" that is supposed to be know for tearing through trails. Im not putting automatics down I just want to know if some were dissapointed in not having that option.

Not disappointed. However, I would've liked to have had a 6 speed manual as an option. And, as much as I would love to have a standard; I would've still gotten the auto. The wife lacks the skills required for a standard. What the truck really "needs" is a 6 speed auto.

Even better paired to that super cool 4.5 diesel you can get anywhere but the US.

I am disappointed. For me - the relatively high revving nature and powerband of the 4.0 is naturally suited to a manual transmission. The engine is strong and any complaint about power would probably be resolved by use of a manual transmission - the auto is naturally conservative and slow to kick down. Otherwise, agree with the others - a 6 speed auto would have been nice.

I would definitely have bought a manual if it were available. My last 3 cars were manual. I still find myself looking for the clutch pedal.

Use it in 'sport' mode and keep your 4R 3k or above, not the manual you want but will make your life better if you like it that way.

I'd prefer a manual option, but barring that I actually like the 4Runner as it is - I'd rather let an auto be an auto and not manually shift it. Not as fun to use.

After reading this thread, I got all excited and thought I would give the 'S manual shift ' option in my Limited a try instead of using the regular 'D'. I have driven sticks before, and this just was not the same- definitely not as much fun !

Would the swap from the fj work, Im sure as new as the 5th gens are that no one has ventured that far yet.

As much as I love owning/driving manual transmission cars (my Audi is a stick), I'd still always choose an automatic in a 4Runner. I just find manual to be much more fun for a sporty car and an automatic more suited to a 4Runner.
